Yes I see what you are getting at. From what I've heard there is a very large market for undersize fish in Europe. I think it's part of their culture or something, you know, if it moves-eat it. (They even eat snails for Christs sake!) I don't know how we'd go about changing that mind set. I suppose we cpould say that all fish caught off our coast is infected with BSC, that might get a 10 year ban!

 

These are the people with whom we are supposed to have a common fisheries policy.

In Portugal where i now live i regulary see piles of soles on the fish counter in the supermarkets.

The piles are often 1ft high and all the soles are no more than 4 inches long, i kid you not.

These are openly on sale every day of the week, but then again these people go hunting for sparrows to eat.

If I remember correctly, when I was commercially fishing for Dover soles the minimum size was 24 cm, which is roughly 9.5 inches. But maybe that translates into 4 inches in European?

That is quite concerning Dave. Perhaps our fishermen would do the same if they thought they could get away with it. Whats the chance that what they put on the fish counter in the markets we just put back into the sea dead.
