Hi, So I wanna get into Carp fishing, and as I am only 14 I don't have much money, and as I only have a spinning rod and a standard reel with no baitrunner, I will use the spinning rod but my dad might lend me a carp rod but not certain, I am going to use my dad alarms, could I use the alarms with a standard reel with no bait runner ? Thanks.

I never use a baitrunner, just slacken off the tension on the spool. As long as you tighten up on a take you should be ok. I assume you will be day fishing, not camping overnight.

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

If you don't want your rod to disappear into the depths, then I'd do what us old'uns did pre-baitrunners.

If you put an elastic band on your rod, above and in line with your reel spool. Then cast out and tuck a loop of line into the elastic band, so that it is tight to the spool, then even with the bale arm open the line won't run off until a fish takes it. When you get a run, the alarms will still sound, and the line will pull out of the elastic band, all you have to do is wind to engage the bale arm, and you are playing the fish. Don't forget to set your clutch though, a running fish can pick up a bit of speed, and if no line can come off you'll be snapped.

I hope you understand this Dan, if not, ask and I'll try and make it clearer.

or........ forget the rubber band (and the alarms) put a small coin on the spool (bail arm open) to prevent the line running off and a hubcap underneath, when the line goes, the coin drops onto the hubcap, pick up the rod and close the bail arm.

Do tackle shops in Liverpool still stock hubcaps? :D

I used to use a biscuit tin lid ayjay, but if I knocked the rod, or it was a bit windy, it used to sound like a steel band warming up. :D

A bait runner is essential I reckon if you are targeting big fish especially, as far as re tensioning on a take forget it, the welfare of you and the fish is paramount. With a baitrunner you just wait for the run, and turn the handle to engage the main reel drag, that you have pre tensioned, from there you can play off the drag, or back wind.

a bait runner bis essential if your wandering off to your mates in the next swim or your dropping off after a heavy session ,we actually did catch carp in the 20th century without them Edited by chesters1

A baitrunner is almost essential for me when Barbel fishing, the fact I can switch to free run 'just in case' is a real asset, and so it was when I hooked into a hard fighting barbel back in June, I was drilling a pellet at the time and the reel screamed, if I hadn't set the free runner I am sure the rod would have gone in, Sure you can catch with any reel but that's one bit of technology that is a real aid.

Nothing to do with wandering/ nodding off :uhuh:
