Help With Baitrunner

Recommended Posts

Try a 'pin with the ratchet on! :sun:

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Instead of a baitrunner you can use one like this

http://www.maidenheadbaitandtackle.co.uk/reels/feeder-reels/spro-dragmaster-ex-class-ex8200

The fighting drag lever allows you to slacken off to the point where the fish can take line easily and one short movement to the right locks the drag up as much as you want.

I use one for method feeder fishing.

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

Just leave your anti reverse off! simple as that!! Its called "churning" and was used for years before baitrunner mechanisms were introduced. Far less problematic than slackening the drag and instant control. Also helps to be in control of your rod and not zipped up in a bag asleep or twenty yards away chatting with your mate.......

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Probably the funniest sight i ever saw was a chap using a baitrunner ,we heard his alarm go off and saw him run the few yards to his rod and give the mightiest strike i ever saw (i thought sea fishing was crude) anyway the fool had forgot to re-engage the clutch and his massive strike carried on going so much he toppled backwards into a patch of brambles .

In his disgust he threw the rod into the water ,5 minutes later he meekly waded out and retrieved it and lo and behold the fish was still on and he landed the bugger .

Almost as funny was the time some blighter was cooking his breakfast of bacon (we could smell it across the lake) ,anyway the buzzer goes off as it does when you dont want it to and he went to strike but in slowmotion his cooker fell over and the gas rushed out setting fire to the bank and his brolly .

I miss my old mate (died of booze and drugs) we had some great times and shared some great moments ,the best was a fiesta (older readers will know of it and its not the car) photo shoot at frensham small pond involving a car bonnet and a stunning bird being photographed

Can't add a picture for some reason.

Will try again. Yeah, done it!

Sorry for the delay Dan, (and the poor drawing), but I hope it makes it a bit clearer.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I would second Gozzers plan!

Budgie the problem with backwind is that modern reels are too smooth and the handles are counter balanced so they have a tendancy to overrun and tangle.

Yeh fine - or if you have a "modern" fixed spool with a line clip, you can use the clip on the spool itself.

I used to use something like your diagram with my Mitchell reels or my old Felton Crosswind

Ah but even the better quality (well the low gear ratio ones) of "yesteryear" ;) had this problem Rich....that's why we packed them out with grease/Vaseline! Its what I do still to this day with ultra long range fishing where Im forced to use surfcasting er sorry "Big Pit" reels. But point taken a lot of modern reels without a bit of attention probably would backwind to freely and cause problems.

I had one of my Mitchells (a 410) packed with Vaseline: using it for carping one day, bail closed, anti-reverse turned off, so, churning style, fortunately I was quick enough to grab it as it went bouncing down the rod rests with a double figure carp on the end. :D
