Help - Sports car hire in the USA

As a total stab in the dark, I am hoping that somebody here may be able to help me.

I am trying to hire a sports car in the USA (Mustang, Dodge Viper or similar) for a few weeks next year for my honeymoon, and am having an absolute nightmare finding somebody who does this sort of thing.

Any ideas anybody? I have already tried all the biggies such as Avis, Alamo etc and think I will need somebody a bit more specialist.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

DR

Where are you going on your honeymoon? Larger urban areas should have some sort of rental arrangement that you want. I once rented a convertible like that out in Las Vegas. Of course, you can get just about anything you want in that town.

Just saw your profile. Starting a bit young, aren't you?

It may be a problem with terminology.

Try a google search for exotic car rental (rental US = hire UK)

I found a variety of hits using that including some of the cars you mention and locations across the US.

Severus - We are starting in Denver and driving over to San Francisco, then flying home from there.

Not sure if my profile information is accurate, as I am now 30 (unless you consider that a bit young for getting married.....LOL)

Have just been and checked it and it said by birthdate was 1998, so I can totally see why you thought that. There is nothing like trying desperately to hold onto your youth right

Cheers for the info Newt, much appreciated. Off to google to do a search now.

Tight Lines all.

You need to get out more often, Chesters. :P

That's a great road trip, Don. Be sure and visit Colorado National Monument off I-70 in western CO; echo canyons, cliffs, etc, not a tourist trap. What route are you taking?

Not 100% sure on the route yet.

I love the mountains so will probably head through the heart of the rockies first. Girlfriend wants to see Grand Canyon so a bit of a detour to there (OK a lot of a detour) and I should say the wife as that is what she will be by then :o

Love to check out Utah as well. Yellowstone or one of the other national parks. Possibly the Napa valley, although again that is a long way from San Fran, our final destination.

In short I am not sure at all at the moment.

Found a couple of rental places but they have failed to get back to me with quotes as of yet. Hopefully will be able to find something tho. Plenty of time yet luckilly.

PS - Thanks for the recommendation. Sounds awesome. Will have to check that out too. Lots to see and so little time :-)

I'm excited for you, Don. You may wish to plan your trip in advance, however, because the distances are so vast out west. Yellowstone NP is brilliant - a gigantic ancient volcano - and well worth the time, but make reservations well in advance. Yellowstone and Jackson Hole are far to the north if you want to see the Grand Canyon. If I may, allow me to make a few suggestions, for what its worth. Here's a southerly route to consider:

Take I-70 west from Denver to Grand Junction to see Colorado National Monument. Take highway 50 south to 550 where the San Juan Mts begin, and the Million Dollar Highway goes to Silverton. Hope you like heights. :D At Durango, head west on hwy 160 and stop at Mesa Verde NP to see the cliff dwellings. Continue to hwy 491, go north to hwy 191 in Utah. If you wish you can go north and see Arches NP and Canyonlands, or take a left and turn right on hwy 95* going west over Glen Canyon to hwy 24 through Capitol Reef NP to hwy 12 south to Bryce Canyon NP, my favorite park. On the way notice "Escalante Canyons" on your map, which is where I recall going over a section of highway called "Devils Backbone" where the road shoulders become sheer cliffs without guardrails. Great stuff. The wife was terrified. :P At hwy 89 go south to hwy 9 which will take you through Zion NP; you drive through a granite mountain down to the valley. The north rim of the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas are not too far from Zion.

That's it. The only other suggestion would be to go north up hwy 395 on the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountains, rather than through California's central valley. It's beautiful, and you can enter Yosemite NP from the east, by Mono Lake.

*Perhaps continue south on hwy 191 to hwy 163 into Monument Valley where John Wayne shot so many westerns. There's a scene in Forrest Gump where he stops jogging on hwy 163 just north of the valley.

Hope this helps.

Ken
