Okuma or shimano?

Recommended Posts

hi, I'm buying a new light spinning reel and am a bit stuck whether to go with shimano or okuma.

Its a toss between a shimano sedona 750 : 3bb,6.9oz,95yds6lb BUT no spare spool or an Okuma Epixor Ef-15 : 9.2oz,10bb, 70yds6lb, spare allum' spool. Both are same price at around $48.

I prefer the larger line capacity of the sedona but like to have a spare spool. Severel places have said the the okuma will actually take around 100yds of 6lb but I don't know. It will also be used for some sea fishing.

Just wondering if people in general would go for one of these brands over the other, but remembering that both reels are priced pretty much the same.

Any comments are very welcome,thanks,

quaks.

Thanks for the reply merlino, I can't get them here in Ireland so have to go the mail order route, and the States seems gives best price I could find.

How much about would you pay for a shimano sedona in the uk do you reckon?

thanks again,

shimano for me, okumas are ok but i have heard a few bad reports about them falling apart after not alot of use :(

seeing as you wil be lure fishing with it, its gonna take some punishment,go for the shimano, be better off in the long run :)

I totally agree with Russell!

Got to say that a good Okuma is, in my jaded opinion, better value than a Shimano.
Cheaper they may be Peter - but better they most certainly aren't.

The sedona was designed as a budget reel and after a little use, it shows. I'd be inclined to go with the Okuma.

I have to say that I'm rapidly loosing faith in Shimano though. I've now had two Stradics (a 1000 and an 8000) and a 1000 size sustain that have needed servicing after just one season.

I think my next batch of high end spinning reels will be from another manufacturer.

Yeah, deffo the Okuma. I sent for an Okuma VS 30 off ebay (Malaysia I think) and it cost me £75 incl a three day delivery time. To buy the reel over here if you can get hold of it would cost you at least £150.

The reel is also good for saltwater. It blows away anything from shimano.

Doubt if there is any difference between the two...probably assembled in the same Far East factory. In my opinion the Far East manufacturing will never achieve the standards that the European/ States can / did achieve.
