Salmon Fishing

Mepps is a brand name for in inline spinner lure. They are excellent for many species and widely available.

I know what rig I would use but over here in the Colonies we are pretty primitive so it may not meet with UK approval.

Waters without pike - mainline to swivel to lure

Waters with pike - put in a foot or so of wire in front of the lure and 49 strand is best (very limp when compared to other sorts of wire)

This might sound a bit primitive, but its how i and must people i meet do it. About 18 inch of line between swivel and lure.

You could try and get some flying C lures they seem to be popular, but mepps are good, as are Tobie's.

Depending on the day and the mood of the fish, they may take whatever you offer or they may want only white or red or yellow or yellow with green or ...... At times you can hardly buy a bite with the wrong colour.

Depending on the day and the mood of the fish, they may take any retrieve or they may want super fast, super slow, medium or stop & go.

Depending ..... they may want to bite at 6 ft deep and be basically disinterested at 4 or 8 or 20 feet.

We used to fish them upstream and across so they fluttered back rather than spinning them downstream and across which causes them to spin harder and rise up in the water. Spinning for salmon should always be done deep and slow.
