load of bull hey, well thats your opinion, you can keep it, and im not going to try to change it.

I know you get environmental activists, and those that dont give two turds for the planet. I am neither, i just have a healthy interest in the state of the planet, and dont want to see it go down the pan.

is there anything wrong with using a bike intsead of a car, or prefering renewable energy over fossil fuels? no there isnt. is there anything wrong with carrying on the way we do? possibly.

You jump to conclusions far too quickly my friend.

If you look at the vast majority of stats produced by either side there is usually a rather unhealthy slant on things.

Take for example the initial worries about sea level rises if the Greens had been right and the initial Headline figures had been exacted out as originally stated then we wouldnt have the norfolk broads by now, London would be under water.

All I was saying is that these people have an agenda. for whatever reason, and we are forced to behave in a certain way because of what someone says.

fact is that scare tactics have been employed for millenia to keep the masses on track.

No different now.

Terrorism, in the global scheme of things very very rare. Thats not to say dont be vigilant but dont change your ways because of it.

Global warming and climate change. No conclusive proof despite over 200 years of industriualisation and deforestation.

Disease, I quote, Sars, CJD, Bird flu. all within the last 5 years. how many have come to fruition. Not one.

Here is an interesting stat for you.

in 1970 there was a ratio of good news to bad news stories in the national press of 3:1. The figure is now 1:18. Its the way these things are reported for soundbite tele and radio which make things seem and feel worse.

I may be shooting myself in the foot here, but i agree that maybe i do jump to conclusions to quickly, maybe im a tad too impressionable.

I do though, try and build a bigger picture, and look at both sides of the story with sceptism. as a biology student, i can see perfectly the theory behind it, but i can also see where the theory may fall down. still saying that, i will always err towards to side of caution, rather than deliberate ignorance (i am not accusing you of such things, you are obviously well informed), that way, i think there is less to lose.

by the way, i dont support the greens, partly because i know they have an anti angling stance. i tend to always take what a political group says with a pinch of salt, if i want to delve into such a subject, then i will read the relevant scientific papers, which i feel are less biased, but still i would not base my thoughts on a subject on the findings of just one paper, or researcher.

regards bird flu, personally im not too bothered about that, partly as i feel its something which the government is working on, and also, i feel that the chances of being infected are low, compared with other diseases.

Good thread :)

My neighbour is a respected archaeologist specialising in dating processes and trying to predict global temperature trends. Hhe talks passionately - and at implausable length, sometimes without breathing for minutes on end - about what the latest science is predicting. I'm too artsy (as in not scientifically-minded!) to follow it properly, but he is convinced of the following:

- there will certainly be a dramatic change in the earth's temerature

- this will be man-made

- it's too late to stop it, but we can ease the speed with which it will happen

- no-one really knows when it will happen

- in Britain, the most likely scenario will be a diversion of the gulf stream meaning much lower temperatures

- these things usually happen in cycles, so it could well even itself out again over time

As he spends his life working on this, I'd rather trust his judgement than any of the media outlets.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I stopped watching the news/grim documentries about 6 months ago and I'm a far happier person for it. Seriously, TV is probably the single biggest cause of depression in this country, yet most people watch it, without question. It's garbage. How mant times has someone said to you, "Did you see the news today?" and proceed to inform you about something you didn't know or care about 2 minutes previously. DON'T TELL ME THIS STUFF!!! It's all very boring/depressing and 99% of it, is outwith my control.

Why bother?
