Geese - why downstream?

The Flying Tench

Recommended Posts

Tench,

In the US there are two types of Canadian Geese - one resident and one migratory.

In urban areas, resident Canada geese have responded to landscape features that provide expanses of short grass for food, lack of natural predators, absence of hunting, and hand feeding by some people. Resident Canada geese have a strong tendency to return to where they were born and use the same nesting and feeding sites.

Edit: I suppose they return (evening) in mass thus the formation but go (morning) to feeding areas in twos and threes. [Just my guess]

Can't answer your Q John, but last Friday afternoon I was at Sandwich bay and watched several large V groups of Geese heading out to sea, going south for the winter? Also a couple of groups of Swallows went the same direction.

Did anyone see that shooting star/meteor this evening about 10 past 8? Left a long bright trail as it burnt out.

The Swallows are quite likely to be leaving, but I'm not aware of any Goose species which departs the UK for warmer climes in winter: many come here for their winter in preference to their breeding places further North, Pink Feet and Brents being the most numerous of those.

They will have a favourite resting area and go back every night to it ,probably a large pond in that direction

If they are going in either direction perhaps they have fields in either direction they feed on but get disturbed so fly to the alternate one?

Thanks, Chesters, this is the answer that convinces me most, though thanks to others for suggestions. The places I have seen this are the Kennet (Newbury) and Thames (near Wallingford), both to far from the coast for the estuary theory. But I did see one island in the Thames recently with a huge number of geese there which could well be such a resting area.

Very intelligent bird, they go downstream as the cormorant go upstream as TAT have a policy to shoot fish eating birds on sight.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

his name is Fred,

A neighbour's bantam cock was put down on the grounds he thought all the hens belonged to him and made life a misery for the other cockerels.

The freshly slain corpse was given to me, as I had expressed interest in it's furnace hackles for fly-tying.

De-feathered, he was obviously a tough old bird, so was stewed for a bit, and then turned into a chicken and onion curry.

Mentioning this to said neighbour, he reacted in horror - fly-tying was evidently OK, but eating what evidently ranked as a family pet was akin to cannibalism

"You.....ate....Fred ?" he said in disbelief and dismay

To this day, Chicken Dupiaza is referred to in our household as "Curried Fred"
