Little Grumble

Recommended Posts

Visited a local pond yesterday. The pond is situated behind the JJB stadium aat Wigan and holds Tench to 5lb. The pond itself is very small (40m X 20M) and is heavily overgrown. Apart from the odd dog walker and fellow anglers you can happily fish there uninterupted...........so I thought

I had a good day and caught several tench to 3lb on luncheon meat (first time I had ever used this bait) . These were all caught on my pole. Around lunchtime it was getting a little quiet so I decided to set my spinnng rod up and have a go for the "monster" pike that are rumoured to lurk in there. I set up and moved 1o feet away from my gear and started having a spin.

I had left my pole resting between my roller and my box. A few kids had appeared (all aged between 6 and 9) at the other end of the pond and were catching tadpoles. They were also throwing in tins, bottles, paper and stones. They eventually spotted me and came over with the usual "you caught anything mate". I humored them by replying and asked them to stop throwing rubbish into the pond. The kids then went away and returned to watch again. I continued spinning and then out of the corner of my eye saw one of the kids attempting to step over my pole :headhurt: . I yelled at him not do do this and he stopped and went underneath instead.

On seeing this a little girl followed him and started laughing. She then attempted the step over, I told her to stop and she just laughed. Imagine the horror as I actually saw the pole bend as though she was sitting on it. I prepared myself for the "snap" that fortunately never came. I told her not to do it again and she just laughed and told me to "f*** off" <_< (this is coming from an unsupervised 7 year old)

I shouted over that if she came near me again I would throw her into the pond or use her as livebait........

At what point do you think we can do this??? Can you imagine if the pole had been snapped and I had to escort her to her parents who judging by her behaviour would have also laughed in my face...............

Apart from that I quite enjoyed the day.. :sun:

Unfortunately kids like this are probably clued up on how to get a lone adult who's answering back ( ;) ) into the sh#t. And if you did any forcible 'escorting' you could have some kid shouting + screaming about rape, abduction and paedos all down the street. Meanwhile the rest of them nick your gear and then her Dad might smack you in the mouth anyway.

Not much for it but to have a word. But anything aggressive will just get aggression back, that's for sure. "Careful by that rod please darlin, they break easily" or "If you touch that rod I'm phoning the police" depending on how things are looking - and just grin and bear it :( Unfortunately this is the way life is at the moment.

Bleeding heart liberal pinko, with bacon on top.

Appreciate your thoughts Glenn..........

I was nice to them at the beginning but dont see why we should have to put up with this. I am only 24 myslef but when I think of the kind of language and attitude that these kids possesed it really makes me feel old. I've heard the old stories of "when I was a lad I would have got a smack for that" etc but now it seems That i am in the same thinking.

The youth of today are getting worse and worse (or do you just feel this way as you grow up?)

Anyway enough of my grumbling, however I do feel that using her as live bait would have been fun :yeah:

I'm afraid it's nothing new Mat. Years ago, when fishing a lake in a public park in Leeds, there was the usual number of kids messing about, but one lot got wise. There were two ways they'd work, one was to try and wind you up to try and get you to chase after them, then a couple more would nick your gear, or they'd try the "I'm interested in angling" approach, and when you were demonstrating or explaining something, one would fill his pockets with anything at hand, then scarper. The only way was to make sure all unnecessary tackle was in your box, the rest being in front of you, to make it harder for them. And don't ever leave your tackle, (even if you can still see it).

I'm sorry to say that, on that particular water, I was unwilling to be my normal helpful self with newcomers to angling

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I reckon they'll have come off Worsley Hall or Marsh Green!!!!

They are really bad council estates, You've also got Beach Hill on the other side. If you drive through these estates you'll see they have no respect for their own homes never mind other peoples property.

I feel sorry for the decent people who live on these estates who try to maintain their homes and have respect for their community.

i feel it for you mate, yesterday i was out piking with the lures and i caught a little jak, while i was unhooking it 1 kid came out of the bushes like some mad stalker and started to shout "He caught one check the size of it" at this point i was surrounded by 6 kids one of which stood on my line and almost yanked the lure out of the pikes mouth along with its jaw, luckily the jak was alright and swam away quite the thing. i never got any abuse from them, im quite happy to see kids fishing but when they surround you almost throwing you in the watter it can get a bit too much.

heres a tip me and andy mac found out for ourselves. when they start to surrond you and askin if you caught anything and get a bit annoying pull in your rod prop it against a tree or somthing and have a cup of coffee and a fag and they get bored within 5 minutes

My last trip to the local pond was actually more fun for me than the parents. First a brat, not more than 2 or 3, threw his mother's shoe in the pond. Not long after that it was his father's cell phone followed immediately by the keys to their vehicle. Guess who was wading in the pond looking for lost items? Guess who didn't even get a well-deserved swat on his behind? And lastly, guess who wasn't going to offer her cell phone to help them out? Can hardly tolerate unruly kids and the parents that go with them.
