What do you believe ,the greatest items invented for carping are ,over the past 20 years?

From the more luxury items such as bait boats down to the more simpler and smaller items ,such as a method feeder.

can only be one thing and that is the hair rig....if it wasn't for lenny middleton and kev madocks we'd all still be sidehooking our baits.....stuff such as bait boats and buzzers are just luxurys but we could get by without them....i don't think anything will change carp fishing like the hair rig did

Beat me to it!!!!!

Reckon baitrunner type reels must come a close second though.

One good reason to do something is better than a thousand bad excuses not to.

Yes and yes to the two previous posts, most definitely the greatest innovations.

Running close behind must be method feeders and artificial baits, both of which it would be hard to imagine a session without nowadays.

Our chief weapon is surprise

Yes, I'd agree with the above.

I'd also suggest the pop up rig, it's certainly helped put more fish in the net when used on silty venues.

Without doubt it is the Boilie and the hair rig, both have totaly changed Carp fishing (and Tench fishing) in MY time.

Also a lot of the kit is soooooo easy now. when I started Carping one had to IMPROVISE, now one can go into a tackle shop and get it all.. even boilies..!!!

Also Bite alarms that WORK..... anyone remember Herons....!!!!

The biggest change though is the ammount of people Carp fishing, we used to be a very small MINORITY, now we are a major majority...!!!!

I wonder if it was as difficult as it used to be that there would be so many...????

On the flip side of the question - what do you think are the most detrimental advances to carp fishing in recent years? Continuing from Zaphod's point, the "instant carper" find's everything at his fingertips and within the bounds of his wallet. Don't get me wrong - we are all entitled to fish if we choose and the more anglers out there doing it strengthens our position with the antis. I just feel that fish care has suffered through the recent explosion in the popularity of carp fishing. Many anglers that I have come across don't have the first clue about returning fish safely and caring for them whilst they are out of the water. It seems to be an attitude that the only thing that matters is getting a fish on the bank.

Please don't think that I am adopting a "Holier than thou" attitude and I agree totally with the posts above concerning the advancements in carp fishing, I just think that maybe some sort of proficiency test might be applicable to ensure the safety of our sport - and the fish we dream of catching! After all, you can't drive a car without proving you can do it to a certain standard - but you can buy a rod licence and a bit of kit and off you go.

I'll get off me soap box now - and may I wish you all a wet mat in the not too distant future ;)

MAGAZINES

From what I`ve seen over the last few years 90% of modern day carpers are sheep.

I can tell you whats helped the modern day carper the most, having little muddy puddles stuffed full of carp that are so hungry they jump into their keep nets.

lso Bite alarms that WORK..... anyone remember Herons....!!!!

yes ,with a bleeptone (knowing a post office telephones employee helped)they were ok and unlike 90% of modern bleepers they had a sensitivity adjustment albeit crude ;)

lots of enjoyable conversions were happily made in the close season including a heron/siren conversion for a "sleep like the dead " angler at Horton Kirby.

strangely i mentioned this on another site years ago and a poster remembered the night it was first used in anger even more memorable as it was in the late 60's

i bought an old pair of optonics the other day for old times sake even rarer though was the remote buzzer box was included :o:D

theres nothing new in any tackle just cheap commercial versions of what you made yourself long ago

umberellas with home made sides or green tents are today are called bivvies

rods have fractions of a lb test curve rather than "stiff" or "floppy"

rods are longer

buzzer price is decided on name or 3p LED colour rather than circuitary.

coats are less likely to leak

potatoes are rarely seen

bits of sheet balsa with a sail carrying your tackle to hard places (with string to pull it back) are now called bait boats rather than "hmmm thats clever"

i think the greatest thing is the rod pod ,saved on several hundred bent banksticks just on one pond i bet

:rolleyes::D
