Storage (Particularly Winter)

Hi Guys.

I've been reading your threads for some time as it always seemed a bit different. My Daughter is interested in canoeing and has an acrobat 275 and in order to accompany her on holiday paddles etc we bought a Tarpon 100. My wife did the bored routine when I asked the sales person about attaching fishing rods etc so I realised an out and out fishing yak was a non-starter. However my wife has decided she would like a yak of her own and not share one so we may soon be the proud owners of a Frenzy and here is the start of my problems. How an I going to store this veritable fleet? Do plastic yaks deteriorate in low temperatures -5 celsius at worst. I am thinking along the lines of a rack alongside the house with a roof of corrigated plastic ets but it wont be heated although it would be protected from the worst of the weather. How do you guys store your vessels? Any does and more importantly don'ts.

The good news is that once she gets her own yak I can get to work on the Tarpon and make a few minor alterations. Strictly cosmetic of course. ;)

As far as Im aware (I could be wrong) cold will only make the plastic more brittle at the time but will not have a longlasting effect. However, if it is going to go below freezing make sure no water is in the hull to freeze.

I think Im right in saying that UV is more of a problem. Funny enough your proposed shelter sounds very similar to one Im planning. My Yak currently lives in the garden. Literally under a bush (shaded) so a plan is a foot to build a shelter.

The kayaks will be fine outside in UK conditions, it might be an idea to release the bungs if left out in the sun to release any expanding air that may build up inside. And like Darnsarf pointed out, give them a wipe out if there is any water inside during the winter. I have a rack in the garage for mine at the moment. If I left them outside, somebody would nick them and attach a motorcyle engine or escort engine I'm sure of it :D

For great racks have a look at the Talic range, think the website is www.talic.com

The sooner this weather breaks the better. We can then all get our sanity fix. :clap2:

Paul, Good point about UV. Perhaps corregated plastic is not up to the task. Good old roofing felt.

SM, The talic racks look fantastic but what a price. The idea of webbing slings to form a creadle so avoiding pressure points on the canoe looks intersting and would be very simple to do. Nice one.

Moonyaker, Drugs? ;)

Hi Costers

Guilty...C2 H5 OH +++, but only in charge of a computer.

The corrugated perspex yak shak (mit rack) will be fine; all you need to do is drape something over the yak to stop the UV rays getting at it. If you have it under cover an old blanket will do the job just fine.

hic..
