if its metal i'm surprised any of its there ,weve had a spate of sign pinching and drain covers disapearing going on lately ,the missing signs though could be a get out if your pinched for speeding though so we will ignore those :D

one year i found a large manhole cover missing from the middle of the road ,ok for cars as they missed it but having a bike i realised as it was getting near dusk a cyclist could die going into it ,i phoned 999 (it was an emergency) they told me to phone the council

the next morning a traffic cone was in the hole with 6" above ground

Amazingly it looks like it is mostly made of wood! Well, wood and pneumatic hoses and actuators.

I imagine it is funded via lottery money (I've never bought a ticket) or EU grants (so paid for by southerners taxes :D ) I doubt very much whether the council paid for any of it. I don't think the 1.8 million is the cost of the machine, it will be the cost of staging the five day "event" when it goes walkabout round the city.

1.8 million? The money wasting capacity of councils and government is pretty phenominal these days. They could have put this to much better use, but no, instead there giving it this "Capital of Culture" schpeel. liverpool is not a capital of culture at all. What exactly is cultural about Liverpool? O.k, so they've done it up a bit, but there still is no culture there that makes it stand out from other cities in terms of how people live their lives e.t.c. I feel sorry for the liverpudlians who fall for this tripe and don't realise that their tax's are being stolen to create something which aims to try to make liverpool seem like a buzzing and briliant place to be to the rest of the world, when in fact, even if it does succeed in doing so, it's not going to change their lives as individuals anyway. It's corporate and capitalistic and it's not made for the people of Liverpool at all, its for outsiders, in far flung places such as China and Japan. We get the old story that this brings in jobs to the area e.tc e.t.c, but then we did when they decided to make the casino in Manchester, everyone got excited about that and then the people got **** all over when they pulled out of it.

I know it sounds quite over the top and i may be talking complete rubbish, so if i am, please inform me what you think is going on with things such as this. I also think that the Olympics are the same. When it was the Beijing Olympics there were thousands of companies in Britain alone, who jumped on the band wagon and used "in association with the 2008 Beijing Olympics" crap. The people who won Gold medals in such things as swimming, athletics and cycling compete with one another week in week out, and no-one gives a shiney ****. If you like sport then you can watch Usain Bolt race every month of the track season if you like, you can watch the worlds toughest sporting event in the world, the tour de france, played out on eurosport, so why not?

This is not a poke at the athletes, i have more respect for them than most people in society, however, when you take time out to think about the ins and outs, pro's and cons, then it becomes quite obvious to me that its all a way for the gliteraty to become even richer off the backs of normal, working people.

Does anyone else not think that this spider thing is a waste of money? Hw can it help anyone?

About half the cost of some premiership poncers wages. At least you don't have to pay an armand a leg to enjoy the "art", which is more entertainment than an actual artwork.

Whinge, whinge, whinge, whinge, whinge.

I think it is a brilliant piece of sculpture. I don't think that Liverpool is going to get to keep the spider, they are just having on loan.

As for maxaldos rant, I can only assume that maxaldo is a southerner, he obviously knows little about Liverpool.

BTW where do you get the £1.8m from? It does not mention anything about cost in the BBC Item.

Corydoras, for your information i am a northerner, from Lancashire, a town called Darwen between Bolton and Blackburn and i would like you to tall me exactly what makes Liverpool stand out from other cities in the world, i bet you cannot do this without mentioning the Beetles or Lowry, who painted stick men and probably isn't that well known out of Britain. As for the Liverpool football team, thats about as liverpudlian as the spanish armada now isn't it?

And to bonefish, i think you'd have problems nicking that great lump of metal, it's going to take a 30 tonne crane to shift it, so unless you've got one of those stashed in your back garden, you'd have to steal one of these first

Well its all well and good saying that, but i cant remember saying i was a fan of football myself, so that arguement has just finished in my view. Although, what i will say, is that when you concider the ammount of money these high end players are earning for their club and other business people, it most likely equates in the end. Luckily for them it leaves them with a lot of disposable income. When Ronaldo says he feels like a slave (citation needed :D ), then i know what he means, the ammount of wealth he earns for other people, does not really correspond to the ammount he himself earns, although i would rather be in his position then mine right now

I wouldn't bother mentioning Lowry at all.....he was born on Barrett Street, Stretford, Lancashire. Stretford is now in the borough of Trafford, in Greater Manchester. Many of his drawings and paintings depict nearby Salford and surrounding areas, including Pendlebury where he lived and worked for over forty years, nutin to do with scousers at all.. :P

The name does it for me. I always invision a literal meaning and shudder a bit.

You have all ready paid for it whether it appeals to you or not, at least one has the choice of whether to pay and watch a pack of over paid ball kickers or not.

The funding is via "Arts Council England" which means large lumps of lottery money (which could be better used) and other forms of grants from UK or EU end of the day the money comes under heading "TAXES" wasted again
