Ahhhhh, the old Sword fishing central forum rears its ugly head once more.

Please don't pay any attention to these 'guys', just read through some of the posts and look at the pics, you'll see what they are all about, big ego's and small man hoods. :whistling:

I spent some time reading through that forum this morning and the only encouraging thing is that several of the regulars have switched to catch and release in recent years but openly admit this is only after years of "kill em allQ fishing.

There are lots of posts on there giving reasons why sharks should be tagged and released which can only help get the message out in the long term. There are also those who advocate killing sharks to protect humans and fish stocks. Its much the same as on here when someone mentions killing fish for the pot. Some people condemm that action outright others feel it is ok.

One of the major differences is that it is hard to understand how a fish that has no commercial value apart from its fins in most of the world can be classed as delicious eating in the states. The fish in the picture was killed to claim a record and proved to have 52 pups inside. The angler then found he had problems disposing of the carcass after his trophy picture so donated it to science, of which the scientists are quoted as saying " we welcome the opportunity to study this fish but would rather it had been returned alive".

I can imagine the outcry if someone put in a claim for a record tope or skate in this country, it could well happen all for a moment of glory. Would the angling press print the story? More than likely IMHO.

Sites like swordfish central may not be our kind of reading but they are slowly helping to spread the word on conservation issues and make more anglers aware of endagered species and catch and release.
