My aquarium

Earlier on this year, i gave up keeping a reef aquarium after 20 years. It had become very expensive to run and i could no longer devote the time to the maintenance schedule.

So i sold up and regained my lounge. But, being a fishkeeper, i knew i would set up another tank one day.

This came back in april when i aquired a 48x18x15 tank. After umm'ing and arr'ing over what to keep in it, i decided to go for a planted freshwater aquarium.

The tank has been set up for 3 months now and i'm chuffed to bits with how it looks.

Details are as follows

48x15x18 tank, homemade lid and juwel cabinet

5 x 18w, 6500k household energy saving lamps

heater/thermostat

2 x eheim external filters

nutrafin CO2 set

Substrate is 1.5" aquatic compost with 1.5" silver sand on top.

Water is 50/50 tap/RO water

Decor is artificial roots and a small piece of bogwood.

Plants include

Cryptocoryne Nevellii

C. Becketii

C. pontederifolia

C. Balansae

Tall chain swords

Pygmy chain swords

Black swords

vallis

Rotala indica

Micro sagitaria

Fish include

25 cardinals

12 neon rainbows

10 harliquins

5 honey gouramies

4 angelfish

4 corydorus

3 otocinclus

2 moonlight gouramies

2 rosy barbs

2 rams (breeding pair)

1 red tailed black shark

Nice looking tank. I have got the same artificial roots in my own tank and after eighteen months they have coloured slightly and got a bit of algae which makes them look totaly natural.

By the way I do not know where you got your Ramirezi from but I bought a pair from a bloke operating on the net under the name of Micromania, together with a pair of Agasssii redtails. He specialises in South American dwarf cichlids and breeds them as a hobby selling off his excess stock. The Rams are the best that I have ever had totaly different to the Malysian bred rubbish that are sold in most of the shops nowadays. The Agassiis have taken up residence in a hollow in one of the artificial roots and are perfectly happy defending their territory against Discus three times their size and more. Oh, and his prices are half of what you pay in the shops as well even after allowing for postage.

Funnily enough, my rams have just spawned for the first time. The babies have hatched and been moved to their pit in the sand so i've set up a little 6 gallon tank in the kitchen and i've moved the babies to there.

These rams were Checheslovakian (god knows how to spell that  ). A lot of fish are being bred there nowdays and my dealer (fish) says they're the best he's ever had !!!

Got any pics of your tank Alan that you'd like to share....and have you got any links for the bloke on ebay.

Come on everyone....get your tank pics up

Here's a pic of my old 5x2x2 reef. It won 4 tank of the month competitions and the photo did it no justice at all

As soon as I can get one of my lads to show me how I will put a couple of pictures on here. The tank is 36 x 18 x 20 and was supplied complete with hood and cabinet by Classic Cabinets of Hull.

Lighting is by standard neon aquarium tubes, filtration and heating are taken care of by an Eheim Pro 2126 thermo together with a 15 watt substrata heater that is permanently on as are two airstones.

The set up realy is not that good for plants, the more so as I run it at 30 degrees. But it is good for the type of fish that I keep and so I am willing to buy replacement plants on a regular basis. The water is straight from the tap with Tetra neutraliser added. Luckily the water here is very soft so I do not alter it in any other way. I do a one third change every six days when I also clear out the floating plants. Algae is not a problem and neither are snails. So I am lucky in that respect also.

I currently have five assorted dicus about three inches long, half a dozen black widows, half a dozen Odessa barbs, a bristlenose, three corydoras, a pair of ramirezi, a pair of agassissis and a and a couple of scissor tails. Whenever I try to put neons or similar in the dicus tend to regard them as food so I have given up on anything that is smaller than an inch or so.

I have seen some nice looking kribensis in one of the local dealers so I might be tempted to buy a pair after I come back from holiday in a fortnights time. I do not run a quarantine tank so I am reluctant to introduce anything new unless I have a couple of weeks to keep an eye on them.

The dwarf cichlid site is www.freewebs.com/microman1 It is well worth a visit even if you are not buying.

These are Odessas Barbs and unlike most Barbs are not in the least bit agressive. They just keep themselves to themselves and spawn every now and again thus providing a bit of livefood for the tank. Dont worry there is no way that I would risk a hundred and fifty quids worth of Discus by putting something in there that would do them any harm.

It is a long time since I last kept a pair of Kribensis and then they were regarded as very difficult to breed and were quite expensive. Just shows how times have changed.

i keep a pair of Kribensis and they breed like mad.Usualy every fortnight. They produce about 100 fry and none of it survive in my tank.Gouramis make short work of them even though Kribs guard them all the time.BTW-when they spawn ,half the tank is empty-all the fish scater in the other corner.

I tried keeping Rams on few occassions and never been succesful.

Regarding "Checheslovakia" -thats 2 diferent countries now-Chech and Slovakia.
