Have to say I agree with the last post, being only 5'2" myself I have found no problems with 11-13ft rods.

A well balanced rod should be all you need & a little bit of practice.

I have a 3lb carp rod with a very long butt handle, we're talking a good couple of feet between reel & handle grip ... this takes some manouvering but is usable. Maybe look for a rod with a shorter butt if your having problems?

10' used to be the standard length of specialist rods so I dont see why some one cant use them now?

As mentioned there are several "Stalking" rods avaiable off the shelf as there are some Pike "boat rods" also avaiable in suitable test curves.

Try contacting the bigger blank manufacturers (especially older ones like Conoflex) I bet they will still have some 10 or 11' blanks left that they will only be to glad to sell you.Incidently its no problem to chop of a bit from the bottom of a blank as long as you can live with two different length sections. At the shorter 9-10' length (as weight isnt really an issue) you could go even cheaper by getting hold of some old (but top quality) glass blanks.I bet it would cost you more for the rings than these old blanks.Dont worry about any of these not been shown in a manufacturers catalogue they will have them, just ask.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Harrisons make the "baby ballista". 11 foot in either 2 1/2 or 3 lb test curves.

Incidently, I saw a couple of nash "jungle sticks" (10 footers) go on Ebay for very silly money. Wish I had put some bids in, could of used something like them today.

What?! Replying to the first\title post here. What difference does it make how short you are?

If you limit yourself to short rods you are limiting your angling (pleasure) . Maybe you are not letting enough line out when landing\casting?

Free spirit do some good shorter carp rods if you really must have a short rod.

There's no need to have 10ft carp rods specially made; 10ft spinning rods will serve every bit as well. I have a couple of 10ft ABU Enticer spinning rods that I bought for carp fishing where a tree canopy makes 12ft carp rods untenable. They're inexpensive, too - about £30 each, if I remember correctly

Hi All,

John’s having a little trouble posting at the moment, hence Elton’s thread, but John’s informed me why he needs shorter rods;

Hi Julian,

I have had a stroke so one side of my body is weaker than the other and the place I fish is my old clay pit it was once used for getting clay for tiles long before I moved there. It is only a small lake that is stocked with carp and tench and the usual roach and rudd and is surrounded by trees and you would have to be so good at casting to miss them!

My friend says he will always cast for me especially if he is over the other side it must be a pain for him

always having to reel in his rod and walk round to cast mine.

The thing is, I can cast my light abu garcia enticer feeder rod that is 10ft perfectly and it is good fun with 5 or 6lb carp but it is a struggle with anything bigger.

So now you know the full story about my disability

Many Thanks, from john brown

Shakespeare® Ugly Stik Lite® Inshore Spinning Rods are available in lengths to just under 8'. Not expensive (about $40/£22 in the US).

The rod is light weight and has a long enough handle that you can easily place the butt against your body for leverage. The construction on the ugly stik rods is such that it will not give up on you regardless of how large a fish you have on. The specs showing recommended line and rig weights are no indication of the maximums it will easily deal with.
