Keepnets (Unity)

Nice one barbless :) I thought if anyone would post on the subject it might be you ;)

I will use a keepnet when and where I think the situation calls for it, and conditions are suitable for it's use.

You cannot compare a minimum sized keep net, in a foot of water on a pond, collapsed on the fish. With one of 12ft used in flowing water, and spread out correctly, with just a few fish in it. No more than you can compare a wire trace with two size 6 trebles, with a size 18 barbless hook. It's a matter of using common sense to weigh up the situation, and acting accordingly. If I think (or on a familiar water know), that returning a fish straight back, will spook the shoal, then if conditions permit, I will retain fish in a keep net.

If this makes me a bad angler in the minds of others, then so be it, I can live with that. I fish because I enjoy it, not to look good in the eyes of others. :)

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Only use nets during a match. Sometime I think 5 hours is too long to keep fish in a net in this weather.

I always take 2 nets, Actually have 3 but I never expect to keep that much.

Have heard from commercial fisheries of 100lb plus kept in 1 net all day.

I'm sorry they allow that they get all they deserve.only one I have fished did that. No names but I won't be going there again. Thats crap fishery management!!!!

Give you a clue its in cheshire and its name is like a soap opera ( not corrie or eastenders).

It doesnt matter if you are pleasure fishing or in a match keeping fish in a keepnet is still keeping fish in a keepnet!

Used properly I see no problem.Infact I should say "have never seen a problem"

Used incorectly without proper thought then Ive seen fish killed.

Education not legislation is as always the key and from what Ive seen over the years the message is getting through.

Kempo I wont bother entering into a debate on treble hooks but if you wish to here the veiw point of some one who uses them regularly and has done so for several decades then please start another thread.

Needless to say by simply raising the subject you have given a prime example of dis-unity.

The whole "unity/"dis-unity" thing is really down to two things- a desire to do our best/be seen to do our best for the fishs welfare degraded by selfishness! All to easy to give up something that doesnt affect you isnt it?

I feel the sad facts of why keepnets have become so "un-correct" in recent years coincides with the move away from "pleasure fishing".It is really in the world of "pleasure" and match fishing the keepnet has its roots.

Specialist anglers dont have a great need to use them so they wouldnt be fussed if they were banned....in the present day there are certainly more "specialists" than "pleasure" anglers.

I dont fish commercials much as they are not really my scene. If they were banned it wouldnt bother me.I would NEVER actively support the banning of them though as I know other "fellow" anglers would miss them.Just one of many similar examples.

How about that phrase "Divide and conquer"?

There is NO unity in angling that I see. But plenty of selfish people trying to take the moral high ground.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I'm with you all the way on this one Budgie.

It always angers me when I hear people talk of 'pleasure anglers' as some sort of inferior species. Whatever branch of angling I happened to be involved in over the years, has always been a pleasure to me.

1 hook probably isn't more barbaric than another but 6 hooks could in theory create 6 penetration points and with the gauge of wire used i think i know what is more caring to-wards the fish (caring angler)

More caring? you are still impaling a fish on a hook however you look at it. As for the 6 penetration points, thats almost impossible! :g: .

There's no such thing as a bad days fishing..

i agree it is almost impossible, but it is possible eh,

i only raised this point as being a caring angler i do use nets and dont like being accused of being a non caring angler (quote"Surely no caring angler would keep a fish in a net in this weather."unquote) a typical example of dis-unity.

as pointed out if nets are used properly and limited to a certain weight per net then they are fine. please dont accuse every angler of being uncaring because they use nets it is not fair,

the word live-bait springs to mind here as well but lets not go there eh as no doubt pete waller has never live-baited, and never had to keep live baits in a bucket ready to be impaled for bait, surly no caring angler would ever dream of doing this but it happens and i am not against it either.

accusing anglers of being uncaring is about as united as chalk and cheese.

sorry if i offended any one here.

tin hat! more like paper hat i think

I was trawling for a comment regarding keepnets, but I stand by my contention about caring. Someone else made the point about the way some anglers use their nets, and that is valid. Personally I haven't used a keepnet in years, nor livebaited for that matter. This thing about returning a fish and spooking the others, not convinced that that happens.

The double standards applied by many commercials in that it is okay for a match fisherman to use a keepnet but not a pleasure angler to my mind, stinks.

i agree, if it is good for the goose then it must be good for the gander eh. but the amount of money these commercials make out of a match is enough to make them put tung in cheek and turn a blind eye to that fact.

I can assure you that on some waters, I have experienced it Peter.

One particular lake in Leeds has a policy of no keep nets until October 1st. This was because of anglers misusing keep nets during the warmer months. I have fished it and noticed a marked difference between, using one and not. It's not down to seasonal differences either, because we experimented on days late Sept and early Oct, and noticed that when a fish was released, there was a long wait between bites. Where as, when retaining fish the rhythm of bites was more constant. This was especially noticeable when perch were involved.
