Keepnets (Unity)

I'm having trouble believing my eyes, at some of the stuff I'm reading on here.

Matches are not just fished on ready made commercial ponds, permanently pegged out and with every convenience at hand. Nor are they only fished on selected match lengths, designated for the purpose. They are fished week in and week out by small clubs, on waters where you might have a long walk, are pegged out by assigned members, who do so while the rest are assembling at the fishery, and probably have to clear a peg before fishing (especially early season). These small clubs are the mainstay of many associations, which purchase the fishing rights on behalf of it's members. It maybe that these anglers are look down on by some as not 'real' match anglers, or that they are 'numpties' (both opinions I personally have heard from some members of the angling fraternity???). These are the nursery grounds where many anglers learn their skills and later, either move up to more competitive matches, or decide to 'specialise' in a particular method or species and sadly, some forget their roots in doing so. There are some however that are just happy to carry on enjoying angling, the friendships made, the banter and the day out. They go every match day, just making up the numbers, with a slim chance of picking up a prize now and again. These are the ones I admire most because, theirs is not the world of hypocrisy, one upmanship and self righteous condemnation of others who share their interest. They go for the pure enjoyment of a days angling, good companionship, catching a few fish and learning a bit more. This is far removed from what I see now, where small insular groups are not content to just enjoy what they do, they must criticise others and suggest alterations or even bans on methods not used by themselves, as if theirs is the proper and only way of doing things.

Unity to me means that, although there are sections of angling that do things differently to your own, then accept the fact, and don't try to impose your own values as the criteria we must all live by.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

What a load of ****** being said on here.

I use a keepnet and have done for many, many years.

Not suffered with and dead fish unless the bloody pike have been attacking the net.

I think common sense is the order of the day.

Good post Gozzer.

Dave unless we try and make the "every things ok we are united" people see the potential problems we will have no chance of defending against them.

My own fishing has been affected by the banning of the use of livebait in several areas and by a lot of clubs due to the simple fact of lack of unity.I really had hoped that one "good" thing could come from this....ie other anglers see that there are elements of their own fishing that are threatened as well.

To many double standards,apathy and selfishness in modern day angling for its own good.At least the "antis" are "united" and consistent in their wish to see an end of angling full stop,no conditions,no concessions!

Hypothetically I wonder how many "anti live baiting" keepnet users would allow livebaiting as a trade off for their continued use of keepnets? and of course vice versa.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Mr Bradford, Sir, comment?

Well Peter, I am not going to take one example of angling to score cheap points supporting another branch of angling, but I will say this;

One is either "for" angling or "against "it, as long as anglers keep within the rules and regulations and common sense is used, what is the problem?

On the subject of bar codes on fish so they can be dropped through a scanner hoop and other far fetched ideas, consider this;

It has been well documented that anglers have hooked and lost fish in the course of the day, only to hook and land the very same fish later in the session, the anglers recognised the broken hook trace and hook in the fishes mouth" ( I have never had this happen, but others have) so logic dictates that some fish would be caught and played more than once in a session..... would this be better or worse for the fish than recovering in a keepnet for a few hours?

There are times, Bob, when perhaps you are a mite serious. No point scoring, I assure you.

Actually Peter, my comments were not aimed at you, I was only responding cos you asked me too!

Mr Matthew, I asked a question, I did not state a fact, heres another question, does anyone think a fish could be caught more than twice in 5 hrs if it were released immediately after capture? I do.

I could not give a fig for the anti's views and that includes anti keepnet anglers, life is all about choices .
