I've just sent the following e-mail to EFTTA:

"I found the tests on various lines very interesting. However I'd be grateful if you'd kindly advise me whether the breaking strains were measured on wet or dry line, and also whether the lines were knotted or unknotted."

From what I can see on the information page the tests were on dry, unknotted lines. This is only of limited value as some lines lose more strength than others when wet. Additionally there is a wide variation in the strength lost when different lines are knotted.

However, it's a start at least and EFTTA are to be applauded for their initiative,

shouldnt it be ALL lines? plenty of common lines will no doupt be left out because of bias or lazyness and no doupt sleazyness.

unless you can see every line tested no comparison can be made ,its pointless when better or worse line statistics are left out .

the missing ones are probably the most commonly used (cheap bulk spools etc) but no doupt being included could ruffle the leading brands a tad and their inflated prices in my opinion.

if a brand says one size and its found to be different isnt there a trades description issue ,the same for breaking strain.

what parameters were used to choose the brands tested ;)

Interesting but as Steve says not as good as if it had been carried out on wet knoted lines.

In truth Im not that fussed about testing as Ive always done my own to decide on which brands to use.

My biggest moan still is that manufacturers dont put a date on their lines. As we all know mono deteriorates when subjected to UV light. The longer its exposed the greater the reduction in its strength. It matters not one ioata how acurate the origonal strength rating of the line is if we dont know how old it is!

No skin off the manufacturers nose to put a date on (and package their product in a dark light, sealed container) And surely not that much of an effort for the retailer to ensure a good policy of stock rotating? certainly in their interest to so they dont end up with loads of "out of date" line they cant sell?

Like I said without a date no amount of checking the acuracy of the initial breaking strain assesment is relevant.

Next time your in your local shop take a look at the spools of line and make a mental note. You will notice an awfull lot of them will have been/will be there for several years!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Strange test about 'european' lines...considering several of those are manufactured in America

There are not as many lines as you may think....many are the same stuff with a different label on. The difference is often that they are given a different BS. for the same diameter.

there are very few actual manufacturers in the world and much line sold is simply a generic make with a new name.
