Unusual catch

Just got sent this by a mate in Hampshire.

I initially though it was a Bullfrog but it's apparently a European Marsh Frog.

If its taste in lures is anything to go by, it's little wonder that our native frogs are under threat.

Is this a common bycatch in the south of the country 'cause I don't much fancy repeating his accidental capture.

I can tell you something about that. It is common in South Africa, and goes by the indigenous name of "platanna".

They are EXCELLENT bait for BIG Catfish!!

I`m sure a better alternative would be to let it get on with it`s life.I thought you could catch catfish on bars of soap!!

I've seen film of old men deliberately catching frogs by skipping little lures over the lily pads. Somewhere on the Danube, I think.

In "No Need to Lie", Dick Walker described catching two supposedly uncatchable chub using large dead frogs as bait. I think they are (or used to be?) used as bait for bass in the States, too.
