Squid Jigging in the day?

Grant

Recommended Posts

There are a few spots starting to show up some squid, but I have always fished for them at night.

Does anyone have any views as to whether its worth trying during the day, from the shore?

As I've got a couple of Squid jigs, and on reading this topic, I was wondering when the Squid season was.

We are out on a Charter Boat, Weymouth this Saturday, would it be advisable to put my Squid jigs in my tackle box and give it a go for them. :)

I have generally found that squid like a bit of cover when they are in shallow water during the day. I have caught plenty of them just off shore where the bottom is covered in sea grass during the morning, but not many after midday. In those conditions I prefer the type of jig you push through the body of a sprat or pilchard and I work it just above the grass. If you are fishing from the shore, you can always float fish it.

John, squid seem to be around most of the year here and I believe it is the same in your part of the world. It is always worth working a jig for them.

John,

The peak time over here is in Autumn, so would imagine its worth taking your lures with you, especially offshore.

May have a go this afternoon, if it doesnt rain!

We caught a box load of large squid when boat fishing out of Weymouth on "Bon Wey", a few years ago.

We were just off the rocks near Lulworth (I think), using livebait.

Fortunately, Ken Leicester, the Skipper, had some squid jigs (which saved our livebait) and we had some fun for an hour, before getting back to the serious stuff.

Yes, if you read the report from the Dartmouth trip they were getting them. We get plagued by cuttlefish on the banks here from july till christmas, if a fish doesn't get the bait then a cuttle will. They absolutely love live launce, and can easily catch live mackerel on 12ft traces, and I'm seriously considering putting a couple of traps down for them on one of my marks just to see if it reduces the population!

I think you really need coloured water to get them in the day, and putting scent on your jig will help.
