Around 40% are staying put on Galveston Island!!

They may plan on staying put but a goodly number of them will be floating.

To give you an idea of the size of this storm, the first photo is one of Ike as it comes onshore in Texas. The second is that same area with a line showing the distance from one side to the other.

Calls coming in to 911 from family whose house was collapsing about them, from others waist deep in water, but operator just feeling absolutely helpless with only words of comfort to offer.

I can't imagine what it is like to be taking those kind of desperate calls, with nothing to offer in the way of practical help.

Reporter in 15th Story of Galveston hotel reporting water saved in the bath sploshing around as the entire building shaking and swaying.

Seems that the winds are worst at the back of Ike.
