Shogun or Freelander

*Ant*

Recommended Posts

Well i'm thinking about replacing my fishing wagon with one of the above.

I've noticed that the Freelander is a 1.8 which seems a tad small for the size of vehicle so was wondering if they feel underpowered.

At the other end of the scale is the 3.0 petrol Shogun, don't fancy the fuel bills on one of them :o , but thought I could live with the 2.5 turbo diesel. (oh....SWB, don't need the LWB)

So just thought that anyone who has either could help my chose and perhaps point out any known problems that I should look for.

BTW - Do the rear seat fold flat on both?

Thanks for any reply (unless it's from ferret in which case it will probably be no use and just to wind me up :D )

Ant i think you should buy this.

:P:blink::sun::yeah:

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

Ant,

What sort of money are you looking to spend??

So many different vehicles out there it really depends on your needs.

Are you just going to use it as a pure fishing vehicle, do you want to do a bit of greenlaning, will it be doing the Tesco run each week, will it be used for towing, etc. etc. etc.

If your not going to do many miles in it then the amount it does to the gallon shouldn't worry you too much, as this will be offset by the premium you will pay for a diesel over a petrol.

I wouldn't go for a petrol 1.8 Freelander, the Rover engine as everyone else has said has loads of Headgasket problems. I have a Series II 4.0 Litre V8 Petrol Discovery, so not biased against Landrovers.!!

Older Discovery's do monster miles if Serviced correctly, although you need to know a good cheap independent specialist in case anything does go wrong. (2nd Gear on Gearboxes common fault)

Shogun's can be costly if things do go wrong. Also check on insurance if you go for an import not sure if it will make much difference.

Loads of choice out there.

Good Hunting

Ant' i've had both and got rid of the freelander for two reasons, 1 i couldn't really afford it and two i much prefer a real landy and not a plastic made toy one.

the shogun, was an amazing vehicle but again i couldn't afford to run it so a mate on the gaff got a bargain.

best motor i had and you lot can laugh as much as you like but it was the Lada cossack you wouldn't believe what i put that through (inlcuding a drystone wall but i was asked to do it to make a gateway) and for £50 with T&T i weren't gonna complain.

get a REAL Landy would be my recomendation mate but get the LDV diesel engine to drop in it, goes in with the minimal bit of extra work.

I did think about a Landrover and if it was just for fishing then i'd probably have one. The reason I thought about a Freelander or Shogun was down to comfort as i'd want it to carry the family, lugage PLUS fishing gear ;) to trips to the coast for family holidays.

Hewey - thanks for your input :)

Freelander = Not with a 1000 foot barge pole mate 1 of the worst 4x4 ever especially the petrol engine

version

you'd be better on a bus.

as much use as a skunk in a perfume shop.

No Problem Ant,

Like I said though, what's your budget.

Do you already have another vehicle you use on a daily basis, if so why not sell that and put the money towards a decent 4x4 that can do both the fishing trips, holidays and daily running around.

Do you actually need a proper 4x4 or will a 4x4 Estate car do, something like a Subaru Legacy, or even (dare I say it) Skoda Octavia :headhurt:.

I even once had one of those funny Renault Scenic RX4's.

All my mate's took the p*ss so it had to go but at the time did everything I wanted, you can move the rear seats back and forward for extra leg room or boot space, or remove each of the 3 individual rear seats to leave a complete flat loadspace, loads of storage everywhere, including underfloor. At time, tested Freelander, Rav4, CRV and other "soft roaders" it had more space with more useable interior and was much more car like and comfortable to drive. (Shame about the looks and being a Renault) Wasn't too bad off road either after fitting a decent set of all terrains.

You could always sell your fishing gear, house, wife and kids and get a new Range Rover.!!! :yeah:

I've got a 90 Defender County 200 TDi and love it. Great fishing mobile but, with the best will in the world, I couldn't describe her as comfortable on long journeys. Maybe a TD5 would be nicer but they're top dollar.
