It' a close run thing between Perch Tench Pike and Chub for me, with the Perch just edging it from the Pike.

I caught a few decent ones from the Beult this weekend so the image is still fresh in my mind.

After a certain age, if you don't wake up aching in every joint, you are probably dead.

It depends on the time of year, but:

Close season - trout

Early summer - tench and chub

Late summer - chub and carp

Autumn - carp and perch

Winter - pike and chub

I'd add barbel and zander to that list if there were any near me!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Its whatever i am targeting at the moment. In the past i have always said chub and tench as they are the ones i wanted to catch as a child. however, in the last year i have found tench to be a bit of a nusiance on the lake i am fishing for large carp as they keep attacking the large bolie i am using for bait and disturbe the swim for the carp when i hook one even on carp gear. however, they fight well on light tackel and are a really beautiful fish. chub are great on rivers when you have to stalk them as they spook eaisy if disturbed but are not tackel shy and will take a big bait with confidence if you are quiet. I hav limited experience with barble but they are great fighters in fast rivers. In the sea i love thornback ray as they look like Dinosaurs.

Without question, my favorite species is the pike, fantastic predatory looks and character, fight like hell if you fish the right waters, and nearly always easy to catch. in 2nd place is the Zander. fantastic looking fish, massive pectoral fins, great eyes and most of all these offer the predator fisherman a good challenge, can be hard, can be easy but always hold mystery.3rd place is perch, which i only place in 3rd as there very easy to catch- in any water you go to that holds em, you can catch em. For this reason, big perch (i.e. over 1.5lb) can be quite a challenge and once a really big perch hits the net, its like youve caught a different species, again good fight from a big perch, awsome looks.

My number 4 has got to be roach, when they are big they look fantastic but mot importantly...my top 3 all need food!

My top 3 are all preds but i dont think its a coincidence that predatory fish just look so much better, whilst i do enjoy the fighting qualities of barbel, and carp, these fish are really quite boring other than the fight!
