I remember my first trip to Scandinavia - we were stopped at the North Finland/Norwegian border and our campervan searched for birds' eggs,

Why ? " Because you have BEEN REPORTED as stopping by the roadside and looking at birds !"

So the Quisling mentality was still alive and well in Norway

Telescopes, binoculars and bird guides were seen as highly suspicious and so EVERYTHING in the van was examined - with one exception.

When they had finished, having found nothing, I insisted they read our RSPB handbook (RSPB membership was much more meaningful in those days than it is now), complimented them on their zeal to protect their birds, and offered some advice - ie that most egg-collectors were German and that it was usually a local Norwegian who found the nests for them, because for some Norwegians the habit of collaboration might linger. Don't think it went down too well ! It is interesting that almost every time one reads about wild bird egg thieves in Scandinavia, a member of the Master Race is at the bottom of it.

I forbore to point out the border officials' incompetence though - the one exception referred to above was an egg-box which they passed over unopened ! If they had opened it they would have found six nice fresh eggs (chickens' eggs) inside. The reason I kept quiet was the thought occurred to me that perhaps they might not know the difference between a Buff Orpington's egg and that of (say) a goshawk so why invite a further delay whilst they found a competent ornithologist to identify the eggs.

Putting things right under the nose is the best way to hide things i expect ,a good frisk is always better than a bad whisk or in this case fritz

I spent six weeks on a Supertanker in Molde in the middle of winter. I never saw as much as a glimmer of the aurora.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
