A stroll with Chesters1

the title says it all so dont get excited ,half an hour of me limping about from home to pond interspersed with a bit of history.

i will post the link to dropbox in a few hours when my poxy 40kb upload speed finally gets it there!

Strange goings on at the beginning i think the "image stabilisation" on movie maker went overboard confusing the sun glinting through the trees with movement?

The field gun enclosure does not face the bridge but covers along the banks upstream where there is another which does the same but that does cover a bridge as beyond it is marshes and soft ground then an escarpment making it naturally tank proof .

This and the one above are covered by machine gun posts .There is another one downstream of this which covers this bridge and itself protected by hard points ,downstream from that again its naturally unsafe for tanks until Elstead .

They are there as part of the GHQ line a line of defence set up in WW2 using natural and unnatural things to make invasion difficult ,i think though the defences are the minimum you could do ,probably the idea was slowing the advance at certain points so the Hoi polloi died giving time for the nobs to escape (as seen with the shelters hidden away in the cold war).

The lage blocks i presume were lifted onto the bridge by a crane so one must have been stationed to do it ,lots of army interferance about here i am sick of digging up 303's and rusty bully tins all over the village

Lots of info on the web ofcourse for the WW2 lot and the hard points all (nearly wink) marked on the map

Now for Mr Bush and Newt ,when i say 1128 i dont mean almost half past 11 on your watch! its before you lot got your shiny colony and your forefathers ate crap and grass like ours did, its lots of YEARS ago LOL

described by some as a pack horse bridge but i dont think it is ,it easily takes lorries now so could take carts then so far wider than needed for just a pack horse .The actual main road to Elstead (the next village and bridge over the river downstream) isnt the present road it was until 1858 the track i walk down in the latter part of the vid hense the ponds name "stock bridge" a small bridge over a feeder stream to the river ,the rest of the road avoided the marshes ,river and bridge at Elstead and a high hill so it was used before the bridges were built .

The track was wide enough for carts to pass and the bank and ditches now unmaintained (hense the bloody puddles) still visible where the roads boundary was.

The pond is right at the end of the vid so if a limping chaps stroll is not of interest then fast forward away ,I must take my big camera down to hopefully get a shot of the white herons although i have spotted an egret down there i am sure these are bigger but as you see easily spooked. My 50x zoom should get close enough without a fat man having to.

i like my mobius ,i can velcro it under the brim of my hat so i dont look even more stupid walking about ,it has a problem with extremes of light and dark ,i could play with the settings (lots of those) but its done on the PC as to save money theres no screen to have menus on ,for £50 its good enough for me at 640x480 for metal detecting so i am happy and thats what counts

No audio ,a fat man puffing at every step is not nice to hear (cameras mic is only 3 inches away from gob) and i didnt know where to get free music to stick on the film so its silent

Dave, what are those little pyramid type things? Were there pygmy Mayans living in deepest darkest Surrey once upon a time?

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Third row, RH end "anti-tank pimples"

Further down the page are some "dragons teeth" - rather larger

Here in East Sussex we were stiff with anti-invasion structures during my childhood - quite a few of them persist to this day

Off Topic

In the ninth row, look at the white-painted "buoys" Lots of my trout streams had several (unpainted) chucked in wherever a tank might ford the stream. Over the years they became excellent trout holts.
