A friend keeps terrapins and has had to move them into a preformed garden pond, Indoors. He was going to go for a stock tank (not sure why he never went for that) the garden ponds probably not going to last long without support. going to be boxing it all in soon with a basking area out of the water.

supporting the pond is my main concern though so im thinking about plywood box (braced of course) filled with foam balls from a huge beanbag :D

im not crazy am I ?

How big are the terrapins Andy?

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Wow 18" is big. OK So I have a question for you (or your mate). What makes you think that once you put the terrapins outside they are going to stay put?

because they are staying indoors :D

Ahh Ok that's fine then. A terrapin that big is quite a specimen. In France they are a real pest. If you ever visit Caen, visit the Botanical Gardens and you will see scores of them in the ponds. Those ponds used to be full of goldfish but only the big goldfish remain because they are either too big or maybe too fast for the terrapins. I'll see if I can find some photos; I have some on my hard disk somewhere.

So what do you reckon about using foam balls in a box to give even support over all the surface area or will it just compress the balls and deform the pond anyway.

I think it will compact them over time. What about some nice soft building sand? Or will the weight be a problem?
