"Limited" in this case usually means one of two things.

1. Your WiFi router isn't finding your provider's internet connection.

2. Your PC isn't finding your router.

Given that the PC works fine using another WiFi connection, I'd suspect #1 unless you are away from your router and thick walls or distance is blocking the signal.

Your provider's tech support should be able to tell if they can see your router properly connected or not.

If they can't see it they need to fix that. If they can, give some info about the operating system you are using and the physical layout from your PC to your router.

go to Start > type cmd in the search box > right click cmd.exe and select run as admin

type ipconfig > hit enter.

you should see something like this:

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.5
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

look at ipv4, subnet and default gateway

it should always start 192.168.x.x for ip and gateway and subnet should be as it is above.

if it is not and looks like 261.121.x.x for example then the router hasnt given you the correct info.

now try typing this in cmd:

ipconfig /release (press enter)

ipconfig /renew (press enter)

wait then type ipconfig again to display the info and see if it has been given correctly. I would expect this kind of problem if your wifi card was faulty on the laptop but since you can connect to others I suspect the router may be at fault.

Might not start with 192.168.x.x

Not all domestic routers use Class C addressing. Mine uses class A.

My IP adresses can be from 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255; my default gateway is 10.0.0.1

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Local / Home routers are not allowed to use "live" IP addresses that can be assigned to internet devices but must use one of the reserved "private" address series that are never assigned. As Cory says, not all routers use the 198.162.x.x series which is the smallest.

Class A (16 million available addresses) is 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255

Class B (65000 available addresses) is 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255

Class C (254 available addresses) is 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

The only thing you really need to know about the subnet mask is that all devices on your network (router, PCs, phones, etc.) need to be using the same one.

Id put a fiver on it being 192 :P

live ip you mean external ? Obviously a router wont assign that to devices but when they screw up the dhcp gives out odd internal ip addresses or the laptop itself some how gets confused resulting in connected with limited access message.

Worth noting ive had this also with wrong passwords and dodgy cat5 cables and wall sockets. It connects but limited.

If it was no net it would say so.

Could it be a problem with the ISP, or the modem not allowing traffic out. What error message do you get when sending

after connecting your friends laptop you could browse but not answer ? Or was that after trying my advice or before ?

And still your laptop just refuses to connect at all ?

At least we know one thing. Cory and newt owe me a fiver each :D

have you tried cat5 cable straight to the router from laptop. It could at least rule out any issue with wifi.
