lead core

My first answer would be never. That said a lot of people like it, for pinning the line on the lake bed. If used badly or just carelessly it can lead to dangerous situations for fish. If you want to use it do so safely and with care and read up on how to make safe end tackles incorporating it.

As you can guess from my first answer, I don't use it and don't think I ever will.

I believe its because its attached to the mainline and in really high breaking strains so if you snap off and your hooklink doesnt break, your mainline willl. There for possibly leaving a teathered fish on the other end with your rig and lead etc. If used correctly though the lead will be able to release if it gets snagged making it a safety rig. Rig tubing is just as good in my oppinion.

What im not sure of though is if its possible to maybe fix rig tubing with some form of stopper to keep it from sliding up the mainline. Iv been unable to come up with a decent way to fish helicopter and chod rigs using tubing. Anyone any ideas?

Hi,

I have used leadcore but find sinking tubing firstly a lot cheaper to use, the packet even has a warning on it about the safe use, so you are limited to maybe only a bolt rig.

I would go with sinking tubing before I would ever use leadcore again.

What I find of concern is that you haven't actually said why you are considering using leadcore. Is it just because it's something other people use or do you have an angling situation / problem you are trying to overcome ?

Leadcore is inherently unsafe because it is very high breaking strain and uses bulky loop knots in connecting it to the mainline and rigs. It is in effect extremely easy to make it into an exteremely fish unfriendly fixed tether rig. And fairly difficult to make a truly fish friendly rig.

It's not without reason that a lot of fisheries ban it, in fact none of the waters I fish allow it.

I think the same caveat applies with this as other fishing products though. Make double and treble sure that everything is safe, leads can drop off and and rigs cannot become death rigs. Lead core on it's own can snag up so it's not just enough to ensure the lead drops off.

I use leadcore all the time and i have never once lost a fish and it still have the leadcore attached to it. It is fantastic stuff providing you use it safely and you are 100% happy that your rigs are safe. If used right even an inline lead will slip off it on to the main line with ease, in fact it will do it much easier than trying to shed the lead off a saftey clip.
