Steve Ringer! now theres a highly versatile all round angler eh? Does it really matter what twaddle this is though? YES I think it does as it shows once again how pi$$ poor our sports weekly papers are! Im not into golf or F1 or knitting but anyone out there who is ,is this standard amongst hobby/sport magazines or just us anglers who have to suffer?

Peter are the photography mags as useless ?

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

The easy answer to that is both yes and no Budgie.

Photo mags devote next to nothing to politics, because they don't have any! But until digital came along you could pick up any two mags ten years apart and the only difference was that the prices in the ads had risen. But apart from the professional mags they aim themselves at the lowest common denominator, bit like some of the angling press.

36-Dave Thomas

Is that the ex Secretary of KAPS and reel guru at Tacklebox.

If so good choice I'm impressed; or is it yet another matchman I've not heard of????

Hayes and Wilson are supreme at presenting fishing. They bring characters and locations to a wider audience but they play safe, known and tested tends to be 98+% of the material. They fearlessly have a go at any fishing situation, Matt Hayes with a flyrod comes to mind, but they show enjoyment throughout. That is what keeps me going to a river.

Dick Walker was a revelation! Along with Buller and Falkus they took the mysticism (not the romance) out of fishing. Their books are less easy to read than Wilson but they contain so much food for thought. They never claimed to have known it all but they put up every known fact as being up for grabs. Nothing was sacrosanct (Walker's view on fly fishing etc challenged the established idea). Dick' made me try to think out what was going on under my float. I do not claim to be as successful as others but it has added a whole new area of interest for me.

The real importance of such surveys is that it makes us think. As stated earlier "what did they do", what did they bring to the table?

Happy Christmas One n all

It's a very subjective issue and I believe only meant to be a little bit of festive fun...but there you go!

I do feel that I have to defend a few on this list however, starting with the single most influential angler and broadcaster this Country has ever had....Keith Arthur, he is acknowledge by his peers as being the greatest living authority on all things angling related, a walking encyclopedia, a top angler (not just match angler either) and respected journalist, but for me where he really excels is in angling politics and open debate....no-one can hold a candle to him.......no-one.

Dave Thomas from Leeds became World coarse fishing champion in 1981 among other angling achievements, he was a top match angler and all round nice bloke.

Steve Ringer is an awesome angling talent, he is best known for his exploits in Fish'o Mania and catching commercial Carp, but it would be doing him a grave injustice to assume he is not an all round angler, from catching gudgeon and roach on the Warwickshire Avon to Tarpon fishing in the Florida Keys his natural angling skills stand out, if you ever get the chance to watch this guy fishing grasp the opportunity with both hands.... he is simply awesome.

I am a match angler .....not an anti-Christ!!!]

For once, Bob, I'm going to agree with you, at least about Keith. He has one trouble though, his manner. He's a right barrow boy, with a bit of a temper. I have defended him in the past as the only writer worth buying AT for. He's not always right though, and he's not too sharp at admitting that.

I think we would agree on a lot of other issues if we met in person Mr Waller, Keith is a straight talker and journalist, but never malicious, he does and will listen to an alternative point of view but it must be based on facts and well presented, a few weeks ago in one of his Angling times articles he admitted quite openly and honestly that he had got the issue regarding Cormorants and the demise of our rivers wrong, so you will find there is some humility in him , people confuse his inexhaustible enthusiasm for loudmouth opinionism , I say to that , they are not a good judge of character, he will and does help any genuine case, he is very accessible and ALWAYS responds to e-mails regardless of the author.

Bob I have never seen Steve Ringer in any other context that comercial carp puddle fishing,at which he is certainly skilled.I have never seen him regularly frame in river matches or cannal matchs though. If he does then Im very sorry and have done him an injustice.

Ive certainly never seen/heard anything about his specimen exploits or sea or game fishing for that matter.

Basicly Ive always assumed (rightly or wrongly but I can only go on what I read, see and hear) that he is a rather narrow and extremely specialist angler,a disturbing trend of modern day angling.

Bob,you will certainly remember the days when even hardcore matchmen used to have other angling skills as well? Ray Mumford being a prime example with the big carp he caught?

Maybe Im wrong about Steve Ringer? but if not, regardless of his commercial skills and if he is a nice bloke or not he can hardly rate as an angling great?

On the subject of Kieth Arthur I (despite quite liking the way he comes over and admiring his strength of conviction regardless of my agreeing with him or not) I would certainly agree he is very knowledgable but certainly have met a lot more so! Some areas he definately has very poor knowledge on.

But as I origonally said what exactly does qualify "The greatest Angler"? A bit of festive fun as Bob says but I still think the outcome is quit concerning!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
