Yes. That's because we invented angling.

 

It's like when I was a kid and there was some obscure world championship on 'World of Sport' on Saturday afternoon. Invariably it involved five Yanks and a token Canadian.

I'm really surprised nobody has said Jan Porter, to me probably the best angler, a good all rounder who's not cocky and doesn't act up for the cameras like Matt Hayes. Second favourite is Mick Brown.

 

Worst anglers are Alex Bones and Danny Fairbrass!

i Agree Matt hayes is a humble fisherman, i been a fan of him since i was a child, i remember the good old shirts he used to wear hehe, mick brown is most likly my second too, but Danny fairbrass is too arrogant for my liking.

I would nominate Riverwatcher the Restless, son of Silas the Mammoth-Slayer and Sybil the Snaileater.

 

Fed up with a diet of raw snails and berries, with mammoth meat available only twice a year when the herds migrated through, he devised a line made from plaited human hair (a number of hairy Neanderthal girls regularly visited his cave, providing both the raw material and the skills wherewith to plait it), a hook carved from a suitable mammoth bone, and baited with a surplus snail.

 

He caught the first trout, then many more. In his spare time between catching trout, collecting new sources of hair and supervising hair plaiting he invented a fire-drill and thus was able to cook and smoke hgis food. He smoked the trout over a crabapple-wood fire. When word spread as to how delicious smoked trout were as compared to raw snails, many more females (both Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon) came to his cave, and his tribe increased..... .

 

He did not rest on his laurels, however. Tying his line to a supple rowan sapling increased his casting range, and from it he developed the upstream snail, a style practised to this day by the likes of myself and Steve Burke
