Summer holiday in Europe

Recommended Posts

We're starting to think about a summer holiday. My wife likes lovely scenery and historic buildings, my son wants to get tanned up, and I would be pleased if there was somewhere to do a bit of not-too-serious fishing. Any ideas? I was thinking of the Swiss or Italian lakes, but my experience of two of the Swiss ones is that most of the banks are private and the fishing opportunities are limited. Any info would be appreciated, specially re the Italian Lakes which I have never been to at all. A further thought is if there were somewhere you could go white water rafting just for the day!

Apart from the white water rafting, I'd look at Corsica. Loads of history, all sorts of fishing, and beaches evrywhere.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Thanks. Can you say what types of fishing? I assume mainly sea fishing? I don't have beachcasting gear, but could handle lure fishing from the rocks.

The north east of Spain would be a possibility. In a relatively small area, you have beaches, cities, white water rafting in the Pyrenees and fishing ranging from chucking lures for trout and largemouth bass to tussling with a giant catfish.

Loads of sea fishing, both from the shore and from charter boats. Get up into the mountains a bit and you'll find fly and lure fishing for brown trout. Dry fly fishing is a big thing in France. Go to Porto for a day. The wife and offspring can take a cruise to see all the amazing rock formations and you can go out on a charter boat. The Calanches de Piana are amazing. They have some stunning Churches too.

I go long with Ken look at Catalonia and the Rio Ebro, resorts like Salou and Cambrils offer easy access to fine beaches and the historic city of Tarragona (the Roman Capital of Hispanica) and lots of guides doing day trips for Carp and Catfish on the Ebro.

Wow, I see your point about N.E. Spain, but it looks a fair trip up into the Pyrenees. Aren't we talking 100 miles? I'm not into monster catfish etc, but I'd certainly love to catch a largemouth (or smallmouth - I don't even know the difference) bass, and casting a lure for trout is also fun. But is there an issue about time of year? I wouldn't go lure fishing in UK in hot sun in summer. Are we talking evenings?

From memory it's a train ferry John, the whole train goes onto ferry and across.
