The Heron Surprise

Recommended Posts

I have been observing the wildlife in the field behind the garden center for a few weeks and have discovered some strange facts.

One of the ewes over wintering in the field died during all that heavy rain, to start of with she just lay alongside the hedgerow with the other ewes just paying their respects and then a strange thing happened.

The heron which visits us on a regular basis took up station alongside the now bloated body and was the first to scavenge the carcass. It also fiercely guarded the feast for several hours per day seeing of all but the bravest crows.

The buzzard also put in appearance fairly early on and would sit on a nearby post to start of with awaiting a chance to drop in.

After a few days it appeared that the heron and the buzzard had teamed up on guard duty which is rather strange as the rooks, jackdaws, magpies and crows usually see the buzzard off without a protest. I saw them both feeding on the carcass for several days, the fact that the buzzard was there represented the norm, but the heron certainly caught me on the back foot.

Eventually they relinquished their grip on the prize and the mob moved in, now there is nothing to be seen.

The heron has gone back to visiting the top pond walking gingerly across the ice the exercise being a total waste of time.

I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. Anglers Trust PM

never seen that before but i do know that herons like meat ,once watched one chasing a rat .

this was extremely funny as herons are not the most agile bird on the ground.

it went on for ten minutes the heron "running" and wildly stabbing at the fleeing rat ,the rat then went to cover in small bushes and brambles clumps and the heron took up its usual stance "fishing" for it at the edge of the rats hiding place ,in the end the rat bolted and the race went on ,once the rat took cover in the long grass it was over the heron stabbed it and down it went :o
