The Branscombe Scavengers

Squiffy

Recommended Posts

I'm with Elton and Squiffy on this one. The authorities seem to acknowledge that the existing law is a bad one, and it doesn't sound as though the scavengers are helping the environment much, either:

"The Acting Receiver of Wreck, Mark Rodaway, said the authorities would be applying for special powers to force people to return items they had recovered from the beach.

"There are discussions with the police and Robin Middleton, the Secretary of State's representative for Maritime, Salvage and Intervention, to bring in special enforcement powers to require people to give up recovered items from the beach.

"People could also be required to leave the area," said Mr Rodaway.

He added that the actions of the looters were increasing the environmental impact on Branscombe Beach by 800%."

Hear hear Nick. I too am getting a wee bit tired of uninformed people putting in their two bits worth about the Law of Salvage, when they know nothing about the topic.

Like I say. If it was your stuff washed up on the Beach, I bet you would be the first one calling the Police about the the Thieves robbing you!

The law is nothing to do with it! (and I am sure you are well up on Salvage Laws...lol... but for those of us with a life...we shall stick to what is morally correct)

This is about Not being a grabbing, selfish tosser!...Not some antiquated law passed when men wore powdered wigs, and were called Horatio!

If it were my stuff washed up on the beach, I would of course be heartbroken, but I would still not be phoning the police because I know that no offence has been committed. Some things in life are just like that. The law has EVERYTHING to do with it.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

First squiffy, I already have a life, a very good one thank you. I prefer to act in a legal and moral way, I don't choose one or the other.

I do not condone people acting in the irresponsible manner that some individuals have chosen to do. However I do believe that the salvage laws are perfectly fine as is. If the authorities are too stupid to stop people acting in the way some have chosen to then that is a different problem.

I hope that the folks that have lost personal possessions are re-united with them, some may be some may not be. Again it is the fact that the authorities and salvors failed to act in an appropriate way in the first place that has caused the problem.

Please re-read my previous post, and understand that MOST of the property washed up on the beach will have no economic value to business.

If my goods were travelling by sea and were lost I would be upset, but also enough of a realist to know that sh1t happens. If it is irreplaceable then keep it with you. There are very few things in life that are genuinely irreplaceable.

I accept that the law is not perfect, but I cannot see how to change the current law without causing far more problems than are aleviated by any such changes.

I am afraid that if you want to stop folks being grabbing selfish tossers you need to look deep into the heart of modern society. If you realkly look I think you will be horrified with what you see!

The antiquated law still works fine 99.9% of the time

You make some valid points, however this law is old, outdated and totally un-workable. (the same as our requirement to practise Archery on a Sunday!...Very useful skill in 1415! ...now Assault with a deadly weapon)

It is only because this situation has occured, that it is up for being scrapped, and that is a good thing imho.

The law side of it is the point, I may have been mis-understood there..I meant that it was not the point of my thread!

Finders keepers is Illegal it seems, in all but stupid Salvage Laws!
