i think it originates here

piker

"miserly person," 1872, formerly "poor migrant to California" (1860), earlier pike (1854), perhaps originally "vagrant who wanders the pike (1)"

(which is the notion in Sussex dial. piker "vagrant, tramp, gypsy," 1838), but Barnhart and others say the Amer.Eng. word ultimately is a reference to people from Pike County, Missouri.

its probably used not in a racial sense but to distinguish those that lived in wooden caravans from those that now lay bad tarmac but acted less than honarably then,a freind who was a romany had no problem calling the latter "pikie" and certainly in a derogative sense just as he called the irish travellers tinkers.

Not true

I carry queit a few containers with all different types of seals some we are not allowed to touch it depends on the paperwork if customs have been in it you commit a different offence something to do with the queen and customs and exersise and tax

You're talking about a container on the back of a truck. Once it falls or is jettisoned from a ship different laws apply.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Breakfast TV this morning had an item where a 'salver'? Mike Wheeler regretted his actions in taking personal items from a container the property of a South African woman.

The woman was contacted and was vey grateful that he had sought to do the right thing in the end.

So for all of you who considered that a BAD law can somehow replace the human will to do the GOOD thing ....

Then think again. :g:

But it is not a bad law. Some landlubbers may not understand the law, but that does not make it a bad law. Now that the ship has been beached, the Salvage Company will most likely have a LLoyds Open Contract on the vessel and all its cargo by now, so it is unlikely that anyone who has goods on board will get them back, unless they pay for them as they are no longer the legal owners of their goods, the salvors are.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

I dont think "pedunkle" is racist, theres a book for sale in Waterstones about being a pedunkle, it all depends on how you use it.
