Trout on flies - some underwater advice

My latest issue of Field & Stream has a great article by a diver who spent time in a river while a film crew and some fly anglers tried various methods for trout. It may have you changing some of your tactics.

www.fieldandstream.com/troutresearch has a reprint of the article with additional photos. Well worth a read.

The only way to truly understand the fish, I figured, was to be the fish, so I got out my scuba gear and jumped in. Here’s what I learned.

Actually, the Field & Stream magazine is probably worth a subscription. They started publishing about 132 years ago as Forest and Stream and have been going strong since then. They run different articles depending on the season with quite a bit of hunting/shooting in the Autum/Winter and a variety of fresh water articles all year. My Dad had a subscription when I was a youngster in the late 1940s (probably long before that) and I have maintained one most of the time since I left home in the mid '60s.

Somehow they have managed to keep fresh articles for all that time.

There is a helluva lot of excellent trout lore in that piece - it could be John Geirach or his friend A.K.Best talking.

From the article :-

"Here's the point: You should change your weight three times before you change your fly pattern."

..and if I may quote the great A.K.B :- "very often the difference between a good fly fisherman and a great fly fisherman is just one split shot"

...and as for false casting... well, go to any rainbow trout stew-pond and witness the seemingly endless swish-swish-swish-swish-swish-swish-swish of many of the punters.

Wherever possible I retrieve, roll cast into the air, make ONE vigorous back cast, then ONE forward cast and you are fishing again within 3 or 4 seconds. Trying to aerialize too much line wastes time, and often ruins presentation.

Thanks for that Newt

You are quite welcome Vagabond.

If the counters are to be believed, there seem to be 3 of us who thought it was a good piece and 40 who didn't think it worth a comment. Interesting.
