Memorable angling moment?

Do you have one? Not necessarily a fish caught or a great sessions (although it can be) but just a moment in time when you were so pleased that you took up angling. It can be anything - taking your kids fishing and seeing their face when they caught their first fish - battling through undergrowth and finally arriving at that never before fished swim - weighing in at your first match - opening the gates to your fishery for the first time, I guarantee that if you think hard enough you will all have one.

My particular moment is firmly embedded in my memory and I know it’ll never be surpassed (it’s not a fish), it would be interesting to hear about yours.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

Fishing the rocks on an estuary in India at sunset when a sea eagle dropped to the water and scooped up a sea snake in front of me, climbed into the air and rode the compression wave in a hover about 10m from where I was stood as he manoeuvred the snake into a safe head grabbed and pointing forward position in his talons before flying off with his prize.

My most memorable angling moment was the day when I caught my very first Barbel

It was from the river Kennet at Thatcham back in 1975 and it was the first fish that I had ever caught from the Kennet.

My mate Budgey Burgess and I had just finished a long night watch in the MET office at HMS Warrior in Northwood and we had spent 90 minutes in the car driving there.

The first time I saw the Kennet I fell in love with it, with its abundance of streamer weed and clear water passing over gravel beds and it just smelt of fish; in fact you could hear the Barbel grunting as they turned upside down and fed on insect life emerging on the surface, it was pure magic.

After seeing my unsuitable tackle Budgie lent me a Richard Wakler B.James & Son MKIV Carp rod with a Mitchell 300 reel loaded with 8lb Silcast line and a 5 SSG link leger and a size 4 Specialist hook baited with a cube of Plumrose Luncheonmeat (I still remember every detail as if it were yesterday).

Budgey told me to cast three quarters of the way across the river then close my bail arm and tighten up slightly and with my finger on the line I could feel the lead slowly bouncing along the gravel until it stopped then after a minute or so I'd lift the rod tip slightly and I'd feel the lead moving a couple of feet more. I could feel the streamer weed rubbing against my line and then had an unmistakeable couple of knocks followed by a powerful takeaway and I struck into my first ever Barbel. Budgie who had been talking me through all this said "don't panic Keith it's only a small one, you'll probably have a larger one later" but to me it looked absolutely huge.

When I eventually had this Barbel of 5lb 8oz on the bank the sight of this beautiful grunting fish with its sleek body of pure muscle was what gave me my lifetime love of the Barbel.

I did catch a larger one later but I can't remember much about that fish, it was my very first Barbel that will always stand out in my memory.

I think this is a picture of that very first Barbel

Catching: has to be the 17.5lb carp on the pen rod! That was awesome! And brown pants scary!!

Best time: getting Dad back into course fishing again and just laughing and smiling at how much he messes about with his tackle and various bits and bobs! The time I spend with him now; that's priceless!

not angling but angler ,meeting Barrie Welham his infleuence in angling is tremendous theres not many things hes not been involved in

in life few people interest me (very few) but hes very interesting ,and ofcourse our celebrities Den & Vagabond (not met Den but but i have Vagabond albeit shortly) ,not clever enough to see through the hidden celebs on here but theres a few i guess

as for fishing i have fished some of my childhood wishes and the frenshams are just up the road so had not fate made its move i would be spoilt for places.

as for catching fish i did the tick boxes as a boy ,done my months on the bank carp fishing when you were nutters now its matter of fact and stalked single fish every week until i caught them or they disapeared now fish and catching them are second best to being on the bank talking or apreciating the fresh air

After almost 50 years as an angler, I have to claim the two events as being 'most memorable' - the first being a sighting by me, witnessed and recorded in official records somewhere of a sturgeon in the River Tees, circa 1972 as a young teenager - I'd no idea at all that the official notation of this event even existed until about 10 years ago when I was in conversation with the guy responsible for them, locally!

The second one, and hands-down winner? The look of pure unadulterated joy on the face of my little lad last year - 5 years old and his very first fish - a pristine roach from a natural lake, on breadflake under a float ... the pictures i took are completely redundent as the look on his face is something I'll never forget!

Thinking about this I assumed that it would be when I landed big fish but in fact it isn't. There are three occasions that stand out and they are all to do with location rather than catches.

The first was a small loch in the far north of Scotland. My self and a friend had carried our fishing gear, camping gear and float tubes a considerable distance and at great effort to get there. I remember early next morning, floating around on this completely still loch, not a sound to be heard except the splash of rising fish and thinking to myself "why would I want to be anywhere else"

The second was also in Scotland. Just north of Pitlochery there is a small pond in the woods that had been stocked with coarse fish. Very rare up there. I had just acquired my first pole and was anxious to try it. I spent the day catching small Perch and slightly larger Tench and learning a lot about using the pole in the most glorious surroundings. The Autumn colours reflected in the water in front of me were fantastic and as was was packing away I can't remember feeling more satisfied with a day out. Perfection.

Lastly, one in France. Carp fishing, bivvied up on a 25 acre lake with one friend for company. Early morning I was up having a brew and was treated to a classic "carp fishers dawn"

Mist over the water, a few water birds fussing around and perfect peace. Food for the soul.

Without angling I wouldn't have seen thing like this.
