If you want a good through action rod, there is much to recommend starting with a fly rod blank. Rig it to suit you and never, ever tell the thing it was originally destined to become a fly rod and you will be fine.

To be honest, there isn't a lot of room to play in the market at the moment because fully built rods are available from places like China at such low prices that it's not ecconomic for anyone other than a specialist builder looking for a custom rod to build their own.

That's why all the available blanks are from the top end of the market.

If you want a closed season rod building project, why not start with a re-build ?

You should be able to buy a second hand rod or (if you know a clumsy tackle dealer) a new one with busted eyes, and strip it and rebuild it to your taste.

You gan get all the whipping practice you need by whipping the old eyes back on and then put a new set on when you've got it right.

When you have the basic skills down, it might then be worth buying a blank and doing a full build including the handle and reel seat.

You can get 12ft blanks at 2lb test curve here, i think they are called the Multi-Carp.

Hope this helps

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

Word of warning, rod building can become an addictive hobby and you could end up with a lot more rods than you wife thinks you need

Ken is absolutely right, with good quality cheap rods flooding the market there is no point trying to compete. The only reason to build your own is

You enjoy the process

You can get an absolutely "top end" rod without the stupid prices. (For example Loomis GLX fly rod from UK store 600.00 pounds. buy the blank and BETTER quality components from the States and self build - a touch over 200.00)

You can make it what YOU want.

Newts idea about using blanks for other purposes is also a good one, although one problem may be that some manufacturers may invalidate the blanks warranty if it is used for purposes other than those intended.

I have a fantastic lightweight spinning rod that I use for fishing soft plastics from the float tube for Perch, which started life as a cheap fly blank.

Good luck with it anyway
