What if?

I'd fish on, I might be a little more cautious about making sure I was well away from public view, but I'd carry on.

I'd also start a campaign asking every angler in the county to go fishing every day, and then report to their local police station and insist on making a confession and full statement to that fact that they had just broken the law. Should imagine the police would soon loose interest in enforcing that law if enough of us did that :)

Mat

That would be very good Mat a really good example of 'people power' and would totally swamp the system. However history has proven it doesnt do to over estimate the revolutionary potential of the British proletariat, the great people's revolt of 1917 was only every going to work if it has spread beyond Russia, but the British (and German) working class bottled it.

In the event of catch and release being banned

Coarse angling would revert to how it was when I was a kid. You killed the fish, and if you were rich, you had it stuffed and mounted in a case for display in the baronial hall.

If you were poor, you ate the fish - and if you were very poor, you sold the fish for what you could get.

There was no shortage of fish in those days! Only a few anglers ever catch significant numbers of fish, so there was a balance between predator (angler) and prey.

Certainly the artificial stocking levels of commercial fisheries would disappear, and match anglers would soon get fed up with carting 50 lb of fish home each weekend. Matches would go back to their roots - fishing rivers, with smaller catches and a premium on watercraft. Commercial fisheries would have to operate on a "put and take" basis, which is probably not financially viable. So most would fold.

So our fishing would revert to sea, river, canal, natural lakes and farm ponds. In a way, no bad thing.

So bring it on! I think I could "accidentally" release enough fish so as not to be a one-man threat to global fish stocks.

If fishing were banned altogether

I'm a bit old to be a recidivist and do porridge - but I would certainly carry on fishing, and am probably wily enough not to get caught for some time - and have enough brass to hire a lawyer to get a lenient view taken when eventually I do get caught. (look at how little notice is taken of the ban on fox-hunting)

However, if threatened with chokey for the next offence, I would chicken out of any "gesture" and simply move to Australia or the USA - I have relatives in both places.

As I have repeatedly said, I'm alright Jack, but don't say I didn't warn the rest of you.

I'm not sure what I would do in the event of a complete ban. I don't live in a place where I could 'sneak' out without someone knowing. If jail was a threat' then it would effect my family as well, so it would have to be no.

If catch and release was banned, then (apart from taking up carp fishing again  ), it would be pretty easy to get round it as some have already said.

I'd probably design a collapsible keepnet, that could be easily hidden in my gear until I thought I needed it. ;)

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Your right, the French proletariat were not very impressed that we did not follow their lead in 1789.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

I suppose if fishing were banned then the lakes I fish would no longer sell tickets, and the owners of river rights would also have to comply with the law, so that would seem to put paid to my fishing.

I could of course go back to what I did in my youth and sneak in and poach. Would the owners actually police the waters? Probably not..no income, no need to check who is there, so I may get away with it.

I doubt if there would be the will or the funding to have a dedicated force setup to police the rivers/lakes, after all, once the FH ban was in place, most antis lost interest and moved on to other things.

So to answer your question Budgie, I would probably stop for a while, assess the situation, and then do a bit of sneaky fishing.

Does that help :)

I will have to think hard about that one Budgie, but my first instinct is to say "no way mate".

I can imagine a scenario where a "greenie" watches me land a large carp and insists I kill it...I would simply ask him/her to do it for me. Crisis of conscience would ensue...how can you be a conservationist and insist on killing a wild fish?

I would move to Australia

I didnt question Dave on this as I think it would just be the last little push to see him emigrate! But would you really do this rather than one of the other options?
