Goretex is fine for sea water but you have to keep the pores clean, if it gets dirty it allows water to wick through. You can buy special cleaning and reproofing washes in good camping and outdoor shops. I have a brilliant Musto Goretex jacket that cost a small fortune but has lasted for five years (with two reproofing washes) and still almost as good as new. You gets what you pay for but I never seem to learn, I usually go for a cheap option and regret it later. Not with this one though

no such thing as a reproofer for goretex, as its the fabric itself that is waterproof, not a coating. you can buy special cleaning products but they are overpriced, just use pure soap, not persil or whatever, just a handwash liquid or similar.

What you buy may not technically be a reproofer but its a two stage wash - one substance cleans out the pores and the other does something else. For less than the price of a morning's-worth of bait I'd rather I was dry than p**s about with soap and maybe clog the pores up more! FWIW - you pay yer money and takes yer choice

Guest jay_con

just read the last couple of postings.

i have in my little store cupboard, an item called nikwax washin waterproofing. it is a recommended reproofing wash for all waterproof breathable clothing. first on the list is gortex.

i got it from one of them posh outdoor persuit shops, the one with all the very expensive gortex jackets at 200 pound plus.

this bottle cost me 5.99 and holds enough for i would say at least 15 washes.

it reccommends washing the jacket in a non ionic detergent before hand. and advises u stay clear of normal washing powders.

i've got a couple of goretex jackets and trousers, i wear them a lot as i often work outside and i go fishing sometimes too!! i've had most of them for years, and i've never used anything fancy to clean them, just pure soap (or you could call it 'a substance which cleans out the pores') i'm not sure how 'p1ssing about' with soap is any less convenient than using whatever you use salar, i put the jacket in the washing machine, put some pure soap, handwash liquid, non ionic detergent, whatever you want to call it, they're all the same thing, in the machine and put it on a cool wash, it comes out clean and still as waterproof as when i bought it, and the stuff doesnt cost 5.99, more like .99
