Mackerel 'race'

There is a mackerel 'race' held annually for boats from our local beach. I understand that most areas have now banned these and would appreciate opinions and reasons why these races are undesirable.

Thanks

Dont know what it is exactly, but at a guess, killing lots of mackerel, most of which are wasted, is pretty pointless.

I met someone on a beach last year saying he had 500 between him and his mates. I asked him what he did with that many. Most were binned as they couldnt get rid of them.

As they die shortly after being touched, and despite their numbers, are a slow growing fish, I guess thats the answer.

I would like to try and discourage this race so if anyone has any facts and figures regarding mackerel, growth rate, breeding cycle etc so that I have some ammunition, together with reasons why this sort of thing has been stopped elsewhere, and how that was brought about.

Thanks
