Opening day trotting session

Tigger

Recommended Posts

The start of a new coarse fishing season on the river toaday and I managed to get out for a couple ogf hours trotting :). First trott produced a spotty trout that looked close to 2lb, third trott produced a nice barbel of about 7lb so it looked promising. At the end of the session I finnished up with five barbel and five trout so it was a decent short opening day session. A few pic's from the session...

Nice start Tigger.

Last week I had a couple of days with my mate Cliff (who did the illustrations for "Angling Vagabond") on the Wye after a Welsh salmon (have had salmon from England, Scotland and Ireland and wanted to complete the set)

No Salmon for either of us, but I found I can still execute a Spey Roll at age 81, although I had to have ten minutes rest and some nitroglycerine about every half-hour or so.

A "celebrity" angler was also on the water, not fishing, but preparing to start barbel fishing at midnight on Monday night. I think trotting was the last thing on his mind as the amount of groundbaiting with great balls of stodge was awesome ! The barrage started Sunday morning, and was still going on when we left on Monday. The amount of tackle unloaded from his people carrier was equally impressive, as was the row of rodrests set up in the best barbel swim on Sunday. I did wonder how sensible it might be to fish four rods on a fast-flowing river - especially as barbel takes here are of the "wrap around " type.

A lot of effort was going in, so I hope some barbel came out,

Nice opening day catch, and pictures Ian.

Do you think it's a sign of things to come, and you'll have another barbel bonanza, like last year?

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I did ok last year John but it was the year before when I had a serious (for me at least) red letter year for numbers of barbel.

You never really know how it'll go as the season progresses do you...I suppose there's quite a few things that can make or break the season, some of them being the weather, the fish themselves and obviously how much time you can get on the bank or in my case stood in the river  . I'd like to spread my wings a little this year if I can and visit a few more rivers on my clubs books.

The ever inspiring Tigger thread :)

Great opening session to kick things off!

Not finished my reel yet but I strapped my okuma to my new Grey's 13' specimen float rod and spent a few hours trotting maggots last night and had around 30 fish a good mixture of dace chub and trout
