Used to have loads of those when I was 'into' cacti Newt, at one time had over 100 different varieties plus another 150 other cacti/succulents (and some of them are hardy in England with a little help).

How about gorse? pretty easy to grow and with more stabby bits than a porcupine convention.

PYRACANTHA or BERBERIS!! Both bloody good hedges, grow to a reasonable height within 4/5 years and tough as old boots with some species having fantastic flowers and berries to feed an army! Ken may be able to do some better? But CERTAINLY stopped the light fingered larries where I used to live from pinching my ruddy bedding plants!!

Spot on, I would put Berberis at the top for growth and density Atropurpurea recomended for hedges, foliage reddish-purple, you could inter-plant with Aggregata and Darwinii for an interesting hedge all year round.

I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. Anglers Trust PM

Picture of our garden Beech hedging in its winter colours. As rabbit has mentioned, it is only now throwing off the copper leaves for the new green ones. The Sparrows live in it all year round.

PYRACANTHA grows rampant and has brittle two inch thorns that are covered in resin that will cause you a lot of pain if you brush against it whist trying to cut it. I once had one go between my ribs and didn't realise until a couple of days latter when I was struggling to breathe. I found it and pulled out a dirty great spike from my side.

Personally, I'd stick with a native like hawthorn or beech.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

They do make a fine jelly/jam, don't they?

Gaffer - I can tell you for certain that once you get a good stand of prickly pear growing, it will keep folks from walking through it. The stuff probably has the widest range of conditions it can tolerate of any of the cactus species too.
