What about drennan double strength?

Rich

That's generally either love it or hate it, personally I can't get on with the stuff, but again you are supposed to fish it to the diameter you need rather than going for the same b/s. I'd say it's not the ideal choice if this particular swim has some as yet unknown problem.

I came to the conclusion that the chub were taking the bait, and not moving. The throat teeth were crushing the line, and weakening it.

John.

Usually you can see when that's happened, the line will look crinkly, like a series of zig-zags where it's been between the pharyngeals.

You could try a higher breaking strain braid - 6lb is very thin and if it did catch a branch/mussel/flint it would go quite easily. I'm using 12lb which looks like tow rope but with a hair rig the fish don't seem to mind! Failing that, some good old mono would probably be OK. I love double strength as you know, but if you're not confident with it's sod's law that it'll snap first time! Like all mono, it's not supple though. Kryston Merlin in 10lb will be fine - strong and supple. Check it over for abrasion before recasting each time (easily spotted with Merlin as it's quite a loose braid).

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I use Mullarkeys bulk spools of mono as mainline, with either Maxima, Wychwood Specialist Mono, Drennan Float Fish, or ESP Sinklink braid as hooklengths.

Never had a problem with any of them, which is more than I can say for any of the high tech fluorocarbons (or fluoro-coated) hooklength materials that I've tried.

Since the Autumn, I have been using Ultima power plus as hooklink (and now also as mainline) in all strains from 4lb up to 15lb and found it to be fine. I am also using Pallatrax Steamlink and found that to be excellant. Unfortunately it doesn't come in lower strength than 15lb

So I've brought some double strength. I tied a rig with 10lb with a knotless knot (to the hook) and a grinner (to the swivel). I tested the rig and it snapped with moderate pressure where the line passes back though the eye of the hook from the knotless knot (I know you should turn the line in such a way as to avoid the "cut" part of the eye of the hook when you pass theline back through the eye). I didn't use it as i couldn't trust it, any tips?

One problem that can result in broken hooklengths is failure to marry the suppleness of the rod tip to the breaking strain of the weakest point (usually the hooklength or knot).

A sudden flick of the tail of a hooked fish can be just one of the shocks exceeding the hooklength breaking strain that can occur.

And no, you won't feel that through the rod butt.

If the rod tip has been carefully balanced to the breaking strain of the hooklength, then the rod tip will act as a shock absorber.

If the rod tip is even just slightly too stiff to cushion the shock, then the hooklength will part.

I'd suggest trying a much softer tipped rod, and see if that solves the problem.
