"In the old days" we cut a piece of crust from a loaf, complete with some of the flakey bit attached. The hook (quite a big wide gape one) was inserted from the crust side, out thro the flake, turned and pulled back in so the hook was concealed. "dunking" the crust just before casting gave quite a lot of weight for casting a surprising distance.

 

Never did find the answer to the small fry problem.

I must admit never had a problem with small fish, now ducks are a different matter

 

The only problem with ducks is they won't let me weigh em in at the end of a match!
