What's up with long range carp rods or any carp rods for that matter ?

Shhhh, don't let on, but you might be mistaken for a covert carp angler. Strangely you rarely, if ever, see pike anglers using pike rods for carp!

I use carp rods for Piking and always have, what's the difference co's I can't see any. If your lobbing out a joey or a 6ounce dead bait then you need strong heavy duty rods.

You'll cast baits off using rods which are too tippy, so pike rods tend to have more progressive actions.

hello dave I would like to say that you will need to get more specialised kit for piking it will make a huge difference to you lure rods really need to be short (I do own two of the spinflex and they are goog rods I se them mostly as bait rods on small waters for roaming around with them i chose thes as I can realisticly fish for anything and with quite a few methods too including lures and baits for other species bread boilues etc)

you will find a shorter rod will make working the lures far easier for most small lures up to say 20g a 7/8ft rod with a fixed spool will be a better bet than most things ( dont forget braid of 30lb plus will also help hook ups and reduce lost kit).

if you want to start casting most of the better crankbaits such as ernies invaders etc you will need to buy a rod and reel suitable again for this 6ft set up for multiplier use and heavier braid/traces again.

these if you shop around wont cost the earth

Bait fishing wise avoid long range carp rods ang get a decent rod for PIKE fishing on the cheap side the fox are worth looking at but they dont like being coupled with a small reel (bad choice of reel seat)

Agree with you on the choices of rod...although I do use a 2.5 tc carp rod for river piking I use heavier pike rods for reservoirs, even up to 3.5tc when large mackerel baits have to be boosted out a long way along with a 2/2.5oz lead.

I had issues with a Fox rod as well when it came to the real seat...the DS18 seat on my fox deadbait rod was far too large for an average 4500 series reel...managed to bodge it with some rubber strip though to take up the extra 'room'.

Peter ,

as you well know that photo that you were talking about was one in an article of mine.

firstly as far as being a "big name" i am sorry but i completely cant see that one, but yes you are right i am the secretary of the PAC.

as for the photo, well it never struck me as wrong, probably because i see this sort of thing out in the fens all the time. yes the rods are more than the requisite 3 metres apart, albeit not by very much, but can you honestly say to me that a rod that is 3.5 metres apart is any more or less dangerous than one 3 metres apart, of course it isnt.

i know the guy that sent me the photo extremely well, in fact he has been one of my best friends since we were 11. i know that he wouldnt do anything to hurt pike, nor is he a rule breaker by design, in truth he probably is as unaware of that rule as the vast majority of anglers are.

i dont condone rule breaking, dont do it myself knowingly, nor do i condone it in others, i used the picture because i just thought it was a beautifull picture that my mate was very proud of, and i thought looked amazing.

Its just a shame Peter that you couldt put your time to something a bit more constructive than knocking others :wallbash:

Mark, subsequently, re that picture, there were some interesting comments in Pike & Predators, from James and other folk too. As for knocking, no, just an opinion, and no names.

fully appreciate that there were Peter and as i replied in the mag, i dont condone rule breaking.

the fact is though that there are certain "special" people out there that are looking to pounce when they see something that they can jump up and down about, whilst i am sure most would have just thought "nice picture".

Not quite in the league of Nige Williams that I will admit, and I did refrain from names.

Perhaps 'pike angling' needs to tidy up its ethics. I'll accept it doesn't apply to you, and many others, but there is a hardcore who appear to flout the rules in a rather cavalier fashion, as if there were merit in doing so.

I can say with all honesty i've never had a problem casting bait's off using my rods and they're al carp rods.

I have a set of Daiwa whisker Kevlar 2 1/4 test carp rods and my friend has a set of Daiwa whisker Kevlar Pike rods 2 1/4 test and there's absolutly no noticeable difference at all except his rods are 13ft and mine are 12ft.

Long range carp rods tend to be fast-actioned. Pike rods are more progressive for a similar test curve.

The rods I use a lot of the time are 3.25lbs test curve and will cope with chucking big baits about but being fairly slow taper, they don't rip the hooks out of the bait on the cast like fast-actioned rods to.
