Pike Fishing

Neil G, with regard to what 'big name' pike anglers do, there was a recent picture in Pike & Predators of an angling set up clearly showing rods spaced out at a greater than legal distance. The article was written by a very big name angler who is also an official of the Pike Anglers Club. Because a 'name' does something does not make it good angling practice. In that case he was blatantly involved with breaking the law, but does being a 'name' make it right?

But I was not criticising the use of three rods, although I do have reservations, I was critiscising the use of different methods, e.g. float fishing whilst lure fishing.

By the way, what make an angler a big name in the piking world?

More issues with rules and breaking the 'law'....AN seems to be full of this on a daily basis.

These 'big name' anglers are people with years of experience who get results....simple as that. I'm not going to knock it if they have their rods more than the legal distance apart nor am I going to say to everyone that that is the done thing to do.

Several reasons for that.

Most of the old timers on here respect the law and try to obey it even when the chances of getting caught are pretty slim.

We have so many new anglers joining the forum or simply lurking & reading that failing to point out practices that are against the law would be doing them a disservice.

Like Nige Williams!!!!!!!

But is catching them by breaking the law the way forward? Each to their own but for a PAC official to promote bad practice, even if only by association, is, to my way of thinking, wrong. In other sports 'cheating' could lead to disqualification, but in pike fishing it seems that some folk regard it as an acceptable, even creditable activity. Unfortunately sportsmanship is often a dirty word.

Yep....Nige Williams is exactly one of the guys I am talking about.

I've seen many a picture of people like Nige with two rods far apart whilst trotting with another....these have usually been on the Fen drains or rivers.

With pike fishing location seems to be important so I can see the use in using multiple rods on places like the fens where the bank is easy to negotiate to actually find the 'hotspots'. I think having them so spaced out is just an attempt to cover as much water as possible.

Neil arent we running in to a slightly different area hear?

Im lucky enough to have fished/fish with several of these Known/well known/ named/famous or whatever you want to call them anglers. They arnt all angels (my self included!) rules are often bent but at the risk of sounding elitist anglers of this calibre have enough experience/self discipline to do things safely that would be a recipie for disaster for others.Breaking rules though is a different thing and we are all governed by the same rules wether we choose to obey them or not.

Also on an open forum like this if someone is asking a question we must naturaly assume he doesnt know the answer because he hasnt got sufficient experience. Therefore replies are made on this premise.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

hello dave I would like to say that you will need to get more specialised kit for piking it will make a huge difference to you lure rods really need to be short (I do own two of the spinflex and they are goog rods I se them mostly as bait rods on small waters for roaming around with them i chose thes as I can realisticly fish for anything and with quite a few methods too including lures and baits for other species bread boilues etc)

you will find a shorter rod will make working the lures far easier for most small lures up to say 20g a 7/8ft rod with a fixed spool will be a better bet than most things ( dont forget braid of 30lb plus will also help hook ups and reduce lost kit).

if you want to start casting most of the better crankbaits such as ernies invaders etc you will need to buy a rod and reel suitable again for this 6ft set up for multiplier use and heavier braid/traces again.

these if you shop around wont cost the earth

Bait fishing wise avoid long range carp rods ang get a decent rod for PIKE fishing on the cheap side the fox are worth looking at but they dont like being coupled with a small reel (bad choice of reel seat)

What's up with long range carp rods or any carp rods for that matter ?

I use carp rods for Piking and always have, what's the difference co's I can't see any. If your lobbing out a joey or a 6ounce dead bait then you need strong heavy duty rods.
