A little trotting yesterday...

Tigger

Recommended Posts

I got over to the river today hoping for a few barbel on the float but only one showed up. I had a trout in my first swim then naff-all after that so I moved down stream to a nice looking glide but again there was no sign of any barbel and it only produced a couple of dace. I decided to mave swims again and finally hooked something solid. It was a wierd fight as the fish held station mid river and wouldn't budge. I began to wonder if it was foul hooked. Eventually after several minuites of steady pressue it slowly moved upstream but seemed to be glued to the bottom. When I got the fish in the landing net I was surprised to see it wasn't that big, as it felt so solid and made such powerfull controled runs I thought it was gonn'a be something quite large. Anyhow I weighed it since it was the only barbel I caught and it was bang on 9lb...the hardest fighting 9lb barbel i've ever caught that's for sure !

Always nice to see your reports - and the pictures - Tigger, particularly on your trotting jaunts.

DOES make me a little envious sometimes though, when the difference between what swims in your rivers, and what swims in mine, is painfully obvious :D

Not complaining, you understand - I love it up here ... but a 9lb barbel caught locally would be classed as the catch of the season rather than an incidental part of a routine days fishing

Love the reports Tigger, I wish I knew what a 9 lb Barbel feels like on a centre pin. The Bream on the Lea give me the run around when trotting, so Lord knows what a hard pulling Barbel would be like.

Thank's Phil, I thought there was some seriously good barbel fishing up your way.

Thanks Dales, they do pull back a bit, great fun on the float, centrepin and match style rod :).

Agreed, you can only catch what is in front of you.

A 2 lb-plus perch from a big gravel pit is a nice fish, but nothing to get too excited about.

A 2 lb-plus perch from one of my local woodland ponds is a splendid fish indeed.

General question - how small can a fish be and one is still excited about capturing it ?

After netting a chub Weds evening I found a 1" barbel also in the net, that was cool (even though it was a barbel). Prefer to see fry than anything else to be honest.

First time I caught fish I'd only ever seen before in books or aquaria I had to pinch myself.

I should think as a dedicated species-hunter you can probably tell us!

I have never seen one of those in the flesh - indeed, I think that's the first photograph (rather than drawing) I've seen.

I went back the next day and got a male - about three times the size of the female.

I didn't bother to claim the British and IGFA records :victory:
