Windows Defender

Here we go again. I'm now getting absolutely sick to death of it not being able to update. Iused to get round it by making sure that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service was switched on, but now that doesn't work. Has anybody managed to get this useless piece of crap working properly and are there any good free alternatives?

If you are running the beta 2 version it expired in December. Have you tried downloading a different version?

First thing I did. I uninstalled the current version and downloaded the latest one, thinking that it was at least one way of getting an up to date version. Wrong. You then have to run in the updates, which it won't.

I've been having this problem on and off for ages now and it's got to the point where I'm sick to death of messing around with it. The BITS is a pain, because although I keep setting it to run automatically, it never does and always has to be started manually. This is no longer curing the problem though. It might be a problem with XP Media Centre Edition, which is a sort of a halfway house between XP and Vista. As usual, Microsoft's website is utterly useless at solving the problem.

mines fine it popped up and requested a scan but as to it actually doing anything i haven't a clue ,no reports of it ever stopping anything.

my biggest problem is messenger running ,not only can i find nothing in a search (its been uninstalled as far as i know) i cant see it running in processes ,despite this bt broadband speed checker always asks me to switch it off before running the test :wacko:

Uninstall Defender

run this at the command line Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

make sure auto updates are on.

reboot

install defender

reboot and leave it to sort itself out.

It seems that Windows update had somehow uninstalled itself. How it managed that trick I really can't imagine. I've reinstalled it from the Microsoft site and it has now updated - for the time being. I reckon it will last about three weeks before the same thing happens all over again.

Jan & I run XP-pro SP2 and Windows Defender has been bullet proof and trouble free for us.

I am on Vista now, but until recently I was on XP Pro SP2 just like you, no problems at all.

Something I should have mentioned: I ran a program to remove the Windows Genuine Advantage software. It seems that updates contain more data than you might have realised.
