Hmmm interesting, I've had Mullet to 5lb from Bude in Cornwall, caught on essentially roach gear, & they put up a hell of a scrap. I've caught similar sized Barbel on light set ups on the river Swale as well, & I think I would have to say Mullet have the edge fightwise, they're also bloody harder to hook!!

Peter.

The loose lines gone..STRIKE.

Looking for votes from those who have caught *numbers* of both species(to get a fair picture). Can you also say which area of the country the mullet were from? I have a theory to test....

Jim.

Sorry to be pedantic but you have a hypothesis to test, a theory is what a hypothesis becomes after it has been tested. Personally i have never had a barbel, but i have had a few mullet. I would wager that lb for lb the mullet (especially the thick lipped) would give the best fight.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

OK - so Jim has a hypothesis.

You have a WAG (and no, not the Wives And Girlfriends thing but the well known {in the colonies anyway} Wild Arse Guess).

Yup, I'll go along with that, but its a guess based on the opinions of plenty of other AN posters. Vagabond has likened the thick lipped grey mullet to the to the bonefish. They (mullet) are the only species of fish I target, catching anything else is a blank to me.

What I actually said was that the thick-lipped grey mullet was the nearest thing to a bonefish you will get in British waters

Of all the fish I have caught, pound for pound, the bonefish fights the hardest

My "world" top five for fighting strength and stamina (pound for pound) would be

1. Bonefish

2. Permit

3. Tarpon

4. Tuna

5. Mullet

In British waters I would rate, again pound for pound

1.Mullet

2.Seatrout

3.Salmon

4.Brown trout (river)

5.Barbel

Mind you, minnow and gudgeon punch above their weight.:lol:
