You can make a minnow trap by cutting the top off a plastic bottle, then push it back inside the bottle the wrong way round.

Add some stones for weight, put in some bread, and lower it into the water with some string.

The bad news is that in current law, crayfish (and yes I know that this is madness) are classed as fish and catching "fish" with a "fixed engine" (a trap) without a specific licence to do so is illegal.

The law on this is however apparently up for a change.

Thanks Ken, seeing the minnow trap also advertised as a Cray trap got me thinking the same.

Thanks Leon, I'll do that then I expect, is slotting the top back in tight enough so it doesn't come loose?

If you want to be sure you can make some holes and tie it in place.

I seem to recall reading an article written I believe by John Wilson , using a wine bottle for a minnow trap. This involved burying the bottle in sand so that only the base was showing and drilling ,( 3/8" drill should suffice ) the centre of the inverted recess. Place some gravel in the bottle so that it will sink, + your bait and plug up the neck with a cork. Tie string around neck and " hey-presto" you have a minnow trap. Personally I can't be bothered with all that nonsence so will be buying the real mc coy.

I also recall he used a champagne type bottle with the recessed bottom (ooh er Missus etc.)

I looked into the legality of minnow traps some time ago, the EA reply was, they are not legal, as a licence is required to trap fish with a trap, but as the EA could not issue a licnence to use a minnow trap, you could not legaly use one ?????

I tried one of these minnow traps, bought it from holland, made of net with net funnels in the end, cunningly made from a long spring, so it was kept open, with bait pouch inside. I tried it a number of times, but the minnows wouldn't play. in the end I threw it away.

In theory it should work, but first, find moving water with minnows in it.
